Local tackle shop.

How many of you use your local tackle shop?

Most of us do.

What do you buy?

Bait + bits and bobs.

On average how much do you spend?

How often do you buy a MAJOR item such as a rod, reel or something smaller like a landing net?

Or do you get it cheaper at one of the bigger shops that buy in bulk and sell through catalogues etc.

Your local shop has a pride tag but have

you tried bargaining to get the price down?

Last year I bought a rod with a tag of GBP130.00

I got the pride down to GBP110.00

My local shop has about 100 regulars.

On average I spead about GBP15.00 per month

At my average of GBP15.00 per month = GBP180 per year x 100 = GBP18000

That is less than the average wage in this country.

I know these are rough figures but the point is

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHOP

Buy your major items from them or they may not

be there much longer for your bait + bits and bobs.

I use my local tackle box for any fishing items I require - I can get them cheaper on the net, much cheaper in fact, but refuse to - why?, because you would have to travel a long way to meet nicer people than the ones running lostock tackle box, and I would sooner put my business they're way, than anywhere else.

I agree with the sentiment. However, I am not prepared to buy a rod at 10% discount when I can get one 40% off from WMAC etc. I am afraid that local tackle shops will not prosper unless they start to but in bulk and sell on the net also. It isn't difficult to do, and if they specialised in certain rods / reels / poles that they know will sell then they will make extra profit too. Everyone wins !

Go with jonhedges on this one. It isn't only prices, its availablity. Order something in the UK and it can take months to arrive. Order something from the US and it takes just days!!

Three of my local tackle shops have done just as Jon says, Brundal Angling, AA Angling and Norwich Angling Centre and all appear to be doing well. They grow, and so does the choice of tackle that they carry.

Local Tacdkleshops vary tho

One of mine sets out to be a bastion for angling, provides a seat for the person at the head of the queue and buying just maggots is an experience. Anything is obtainable but little is available.

Another is just a base for the owners fishing "activities".

Another is taking on the mail order trade and winning... open on sunday is a real winner.

My local tackle dealer will match any advertised price in the fishing magazines, just take him the advert, he hasnt let me down yet. I prefer to do this for most of my gear, if any goes wrong with it then hes only 5 minutes away in the car. Im very much a regular now, all the employees have got to know me over the years. My last purchase were two Greys X-Flite carp rods, he knocked off £25 each!! Cant fault him. Great place to get local advice an all.
