Jigging for perch

Recommended Posts

I've never done it but it's bound to work in the right situation. I've had some clonkers on the mepp's style lures ( spinning) as the lures have been sinking. I've even had them trying to take my avon float whilst retreiving it :D .

I've never done much Chub fishing and my PB is around 5lb and was on a Mepps while Perch fishing. Anderoo's and other AN members exploits has made me want to give them ago this year between my normal Perch and Pike fishing.

I've never done any good with chub on soft lures and whilst perch will take jigs (my biggest fell to one) I've always done better fishing them steadily along the bottom with just the occasional touchdown to check that I'm fishing at the right depth than with a traditional double twitch retrieve.

Thanks for that Ken - very helpful. I'll try that this evening! Sounds like a job for Herr Crayfish :)

I had a very enjoyable evening by the river, getting to grips with the jigging. I even caught a perch, my first one on the soft plastics! Only a little one, but it was disproportionately exciting :)

As dusk fell I watched a young barn owl slowly and quietly work along the far bank, really close to me, and saw a pretty big carp stick its head out, then come up again to suck a drowned crane fly off the surface. I'll be back for him another evening ;)

I had my first go yesterday evening, and I think I'm in love

I'm waiting for the replacement drop shot rod to come back from Fox so decided to try a bit of jigging - little soft plastic fish imitations on a light jig head, 6' 6" v jig rod, little reel and light braid. It's so much fun! I'm not very good at it yet but I'm totally sold on it, I could feel the perch nipping at the tail as I was bouncing it along the bottom of the river. I had 2 proper takes but both fish came off, they weren't very big and I think they just had the jig stuck in their mouths! One I almost landed but it had the whole jig doubled over sideways in its mouth (only about a pound!) and spat it back at me as I reached for the net.

I'm really looking forward to trying the drop shotting fer them, I think that might be even better.

I've been looking for some new, fun fishing to do in the summer/autumn, and this is definitely it. It's also got the potential to produce some very big fish, and is 100% crayfish proof. Heaven :) One pound perch have never been as exciting!

for fishing the drop or jigging check the lures and jigheads on zestify.tv.fishing or banjo 006 fishing system ,but you get a to see the lures in action on zestify.tv,but you can get them cheaper ,on banjo 006 fishig sysyem ,mate of mine says there amazing, made for bass in the states and quality hooks

What exactly is a drop shot rod? It seems you can drop shot on any kind of rod. It's in the tying of the rig not in the rod that makes it dropshot.

Most of the good Drop Shotting rods I have looked at (I'm in the process of buying/building one and all I know about the whole technique is still based on research/theory rather than actually doing it!) have spliced tips. This is (or seems to be) for several reasons,Firstly to help you detect bites (think more subtle takes like quiver tipping a natural bait rather than "banging" into a lure),secondly to help work (or possibly more accurately not "over work") the lure and lastly to maintain the hook hold in delicate mouths.

Obviously the correct length weight and power are also considerations. Many also have "special" handles/reel seats that allow you direct contact with the rod blank to supposedly help you "feel" the action of the lure/takes.Other than when Ive tried similar on other types of rod (and found it a bit "gimmicky") I cant really comment till I have some experience of using one.

Its seems a lot of people don't understand the technique of drop shotting.Even though despite being quite clever its really simple (well it seems so in theory but I'm sure mastering it will take some time!) but for those interested try doing a search on U-Tube as there are plenty of videos both US and European showing the tactic that will demonstrate.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
