Bait business idea

This thread is to get your thoughts on my idea

 

My idea is to cut out the prep on the bank by doing it all for you.

 

With a selection of 30+ seperate ingredients to choose from, you order what recipe you want & it will be either for collection or delivered direct to you. All fully prepared for use, we will even add any liquids to soak in during transport, for that extra touch. All you will have do is open the bag & use.

I aim to keep pricing as low as possible & prepared baits as fresh as they can be. I will have 1, 2, 5, & 10 kg bags so you can order the weight you want.

 

The plan is to have a website which allows you to register, for free, as a customer, to get a customer number , then view the ingredients list & make your own mix. This we will then, log to you for future reference & prepare for you, for collection or delivery. So as you can see there is a wide range of recipes to get you the best mix for each water you fish or species you target. I hope this gives you the basic plan & I await your replies with thanks. Even if you justr read this & don't want to reply, please just say wether or not you like the idea & would consider using it..

Not really the sort of thing that would appeal to me as oddly I love mixing groundbait. Sitting on the bank adding a kilo of this and a kilo of that and this week I will add a few handfuls of some thing different. Maybe grind something in to powder to add. It's as much a part of fishing to me as catching fish.

 

The idea of having all this done for me, would take a lot of the fun out of fishing

im with dales on this one, not for me either im afraid.

 

mixing your own groundbait is all part of the fun of fishing and the hunt. might appeal to hardcore carp anglers though, sorry that i could not resist either

Like Dales and Andy, it's not for me either. I don't use boilies, (if that's what you're meaning), and I prefer to mix my own groundbait.

 

If watatoad signs up, you'd better have a good stock of mice though!

If your referring to boilies then this is already done by the numerous bait companies out there. They also mix, roll and boil them which is the time consuming part of boilie making. All to your specified recipe.

I would think very carefully before going down this line.

Your post presumably aims to "sell" the idea but fails to even tell your potential punters what it is that you propose to sell beyong it being "bait" of some sort.

Is it groundbait ? Some sort of particle mix ? Boilies ?

I for one don't have a clue and it's clear from some of the posts above that others are confused too.

Also I would have thought that you would struggle to give a good price for the ground bait. Most companies like this work of a principle of 1/3 price of a product is to pay for the good to make it, 1/3 is to pay the people making it and 1/3 is profit. That's quite a large increase in price for someone to pay when they normally mix it themselves..... i.e. normally my groundbait mix costs £6 per kilo then buying it from you would cost £8 per kilo. You would either have to buy quantities of groundbait in massive quantities to make savings on the products you buy or cut down on the amount of profit you make..... both of which have problems. If you were providing something that most people aren't used to making themselves then it might work but most people wouldn't want to add 30% on to the price of their groundbait.

My business is designing and building websites so I come across a lot of start ups and the points here I tend to agree with. I do think some people will pay a premium however for convenience so it is possible there is a market to be forged.

 

The biggest problem I see is weight, if you are selling online then you need your product to be either light and cheap or heavy and premium (light and premium is even better but almost never happens!!!). If your trying to knock out 1k bags of mix, which is also biodegradable/foodstuff needing more packaging then unless your talking bulk it will be very expensive to ship. A former client of mine was trying to do cheap cheese via the web and it just did not work, despite warnings, because something heavy needs a premium. Conversely free range/organic meat & veg does sell online because the price is high to begin with so the shipping is offset.

 

It's also worth remembering you will lose around 5% on payment gateway fees such as paypal.

 

I always recommend businesses going online as it really is a great way to start out for little cost, but really think long and hard about shipping costs, they are the hidden pit fall of many online stores.

I thankyou for your honest replies. I admit I could have worded it better. It would have been a selection of 30+ particles, but know see it would not work. I do appreciate your pleasure in mixing at the bankside, I would not want to take that away. As an idea it seemed good, as a business it now seems doomed to fail. So thanks again for your honest replies. The forum works again.
