Eel Swimming In Open Water

I often used to see them first thing in the morning looking over the side of the Windermere ferry.

When I was a kid, we visited the holiday camp at Pwllheli, where you could see eels in the boating lake, scavenging on leftovers chucked in the lake. I had some cod in batter, and in my coat pocket, a crab line.

 

It got messy. Mum never did get the eel slime off my coat!

I remember a few years back in Lyme Regis watching what seemed to be huge eels in the weir pools less than 100m from where the river Lym joined the sea. Never seen them there since though!

i bumped into some big ones decades ago investigating that "sewer" thats on the beach near butlins at bognor ,they were stopped going right in by a grill so had collected in there ,strange feeling as they squirmed about you waist deep in water ,i presume the outflow tasted of home

 

on long things in water i spotted a grass snake stalking a very small duckling today ,it just had its head above water and changed direction as the duckling did ,not sure who was crapping themselves as i stood up they both disappeared at speed in opposite directions

seen them taking frogs before not duckling albeit newborn ,no sign of the mum duck anywhere ,without mum if its not the snake it will be the heron or if very unlucky the resident geese will drown it as i have seen with adult ducks if they are foolish enough to get in beak range and the young ones get upset

That reminds me, Dawlish Warren, you can often see eels in the river that flows through the town centre.

i have also seen eels on the surface right in the middle of a sunny day, in about 10 feet of water, all most cruising the surface like the chub in the swim.

W were in Dawlish last week, didn't see any eels in that river, but was happy that my eldest grandson is becoming a good fish spotter, he picked out (visually not actually) several trout in there.

I believe Anderoo has deliberately caught an eel on the fly by sight.

 

I have, it was mooching around the margins of a gin clear gravel pit trout lake, and after watching it for a while I wondered if it would take a fly - so I dropped in the little damsel nymph I was fishing with and wiggled it past its nose, and it shot forward and grabbed it! I was really surprised!

Perhaps the wrong time of year, or perhaps a reflection of the eel shortage we keep hearing about - there used to be lots of them. Glad there are still plenty of trout, though!

I was in Copenhagen a few weeks ago and they have some massive eels in the lake at Tivoli Gardens and they seem happy to swim around in bright sunshine and out compete the Carp for any food thrown in to the lake.
