LIGHT AT NIGHT

quote:

I think it was Dick Walker who pointed out that if you keep the light low enough, and the angle narrow enough, then the light from a torch is reflected off the surface of the water, and does not penetrate

You will find that this relates to the refractive index of water. If the surface is dead flat calm then this would be correct, but if there were a slight ripple, the beam of light would hit the water at a different angle, therefor increasing the angle of refraction and sending a beam of light almost vertically down through the top surface layers. The best way to prevent this would be to use a red beam (in theory) as it would not contain any "blue" light which is the only light colour which can exist in water below a certain depth.

either that or fish in the day :D

cheers,

The bit about lighting a cigarette was a throwback to the Walker era. Everything was taken very seriously then! Anyone using a stainless steel rod pod would certainly have been ridiculed.

This is obviously ridiculous: there's nothing wrong with stainless steel...as long as you paint it matt black :)

Gasp!!!

Black only if you only plan to use it for night sessions when there is no moon and you are completely away from the glow of any town/city lights. Even then a dull, dark gray would be safer since the stars will provide a little glow most nights.

Daytime the underside should match the sky which means you will need a variety of painted stainless. And camo for the top to match your area so about 7 or 8 different patterns will be needed.

Just to add petrol to the flames:

When I was on holiday this year there was a harbour wall with halogen lights on the water! All the fish wer concentrated in these pools of light including the shark I caught.

Isn't it also common practice when night fishing at sea to shine powerful lights on to the waters surface?

Whoa! Easy! Paint Stainless Black, do you know what you're saying?!! You can't paint stainless black, that's illegal, surely?!!

The only thing that should be applied to stainless is polish! :D:D
