Phone hacking!

It can be done because GSM security was made deliberately weak so that civilians can't keep secrets from the authorities! Your calls are only encrypted between the mobile phone and the Base Station and even then it's a pretty weak encryption that can be cracked in seconds. So the News of the World can either decrypt the signal from your phone or tap the link between the Base Station and the Base Station Controller, or clone the phone and retrieve your voice mail.

i have heard that blackberry use a different setup for their mail? making it very difficult to see ,i presume though a hacker could just go to the mail server and get it from there?

i presume these O2 sims that let you keep your old number is a easy way to pretend someone elses number is yours?

Another one of your conspiracy theories Colin? How do you work these thing out? Where do you get thin info from?

Here is how it worked. No decryption, no interception, no cloning of phones. All you needed was a phone, the targets phone number and a bit of luck.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Sorry Chesters, but BB is not the holy grail, ther are a good number of sites dedicated to BB. These hackers spend a stupid amount of time to crack into every type of communication.

Making the most of it

That's what I thought - voicemail mailboxes with only a PIN for access control, and no obligation to reset it from the default.

"phone hacking" suggests something sophisticated, this is as much hacking as trying 0000 on a combination lock!

This Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper, News International chairman James Murdoch has said.

In the past few days, claims have been made that the paper authorised hacking into the mobile phones of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and the families of 7/7 bombing victims.

Mr Murdoch said proceeds from the last edition would go to good causes.
