Carp float rod

Some advice would be much appreciated. I have for some time been float fishing waters where carp run at about 5-10 lb - sometimes larger. I have been using a 13ft Shimano match rod & have the feeling that, as excellent as this rod is, I ought to be using something a little "beefier". I enjoy using the float. Any ideas ?

I'm always recommending these!

Drennan Series 7 Avon/Quiver, for float fishing for smaller carp I'd say the 12ft 1.25lb tc version would be about right, but there's a stronger 1.5lb tc version too. With the normal avon top on it's a brilliant rod for this kind of fishing plus legering with bobbins, etc., plus you get a quivertip top with 3 different push-in quivertips for quivertipping on the rivers or stillwaters.

I use mine all the time, mainly for chub and perch, but it's so versatile. Top Drennan quality too, I still can't believe you get all that rod for £90!

Most tackle shops sell them, it's worth giving one a waggle if possible, see if you like it.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I'd also recommend the drennan Series 7 tench / specimen float if you are only float fishing - amazing rod, I've had several 6-8lb carp on mine, and it handled them well. I'd have no worries about it handling fish up to mid - doubles based on the way it coped with those!

I have a 14' ABU Conolon premiere that landed two mid double carp just last night. No problems but I couldn't exactly bully them to the net. :D

Polaris do a heavy duty carp float rod

I have an old Polaris feeder rod that I rate very highly

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

If it's mainly Carp that you will be catching then the Shimano Beastmaster Carp Float rods are more then up to the job and will cast large pellet wagglers and make a great surface fishing rod for floaters.

Thanks very much , guys, for the advice. I will look at all the possibilities.

What you need to do first is decide what strength line/hook length you are going to need and match the rod to that. To decide that you will need to know not just the size of the fish in a water, but all about the water, things like how much room to play fish there is and what snags/weed and so on are like. It's no good coming on here and being told i caught a carp/fish this big on this rod so that's the one to get.
