Hi all,

 

I managed to squeeze in some time for a day down at a lake on Saturday in the persuit of a nice Tench... Hadnt really had much all day, apart from a bream of a couple of lb. Then about 17:30 it seemed as though feeding had started as I was getting a lot of line bites! When all of a sudden my Polaris float sunk beneath the surface and I struck into what felt like a nice fish!!! I was only on a 4lb hooklink with a size 16 hook with single red sweetcorn so I couldnt be too aggresive with the fish...

 

Anyway, after a good few mins of winding both in and reverse to ease on the strain of the line I managed to get it on the bank, and it weighed just over the 9lb mark...

 

Not a huge fish by any standards (especially Carp) but still my biggest fish to date as I never go out looking for Carp, I prefer the other Coarse fish, like Tench, Perch etc... anyway, a new species for me, a Mirror Carp and also my biggest fish yet, so still gave me a huge smile! :D

That's a real stunner of a fish Stu. The scale pattern on it is awesome and a very timely post, that's one of the things that is so good about Carp fishing. They just look so good.

 

Some great angling to play it on that hook length :thumbs:

I prefer the other Coarse fish, like Tench, Perch etc...

 

Lots of people feel that way at first but you will soon get over it and want to do some proper fishing ;) Ignore the crusty old Yoda Types that hang around Anglers net spreading there dead religion of coarse fishing with PINs, Bread and Sweetcorn.

 

 

Not a huge fish by any standards (especially Carp) but still my biggest fish to date as I never go out looking for Carp, anyway, a new species for me, a Mirror Carp and also my biggest fish yet, so still gave me a huge smile! :D

 

Not a huge fish, how many Tench, Perch etc grow to 9lb ;) it's a clonker of a fish to catch and introduce you to the wonders of Carp fishing, once you catch a few you will soon forget about all those other nuisance species. Carp grow big, they fight hard, the look so nice and are individuals just like carp anglers they are not just part of a shoal :D Carp are unique just like the anglers who fish for them.

 

All you need to do now is get some Carp Rods, Delkims, Bivy, Rod Pod, Bed Cahir and a bag of boilies and your conversion to the darkside will be complete.

Ha ha... the dark side eh!.... for now, I think I'll stick to the Force and keep on with my usual fishing and if I catch another one, so be it ;) .... and for the record, I dont own a Pin (let the attacking begin!) :D

 

But I do agree, it was nice to feel the weight of a larger fish, so I might try a little of both... but I wont call myself a Carp fisherman :D .......

Size, while in many aspects is important, it is relative to conditions (or the subject). For my own set of standards, since I no longer travel great distances, a 9 lb. fish is a specimen. Specimen should be defined in the mind of the angler. Sometimes the largest fish of a particular species in the venue is 10 lbs. Then a 9 lb fish is a MONSTER. Did you really catch a monster? (Don't be modest!! ha ha)

 

I too want to congratulate you on your patients and angling skills. When you get up near a 3 to 1 difference line to fish weight the angler plays a huge role in landing the fish. Over that, well, you may have had a bit of luck also.

Nice one Stu. My first 'proper' carp (caught intentionally) was around 1lb smaller than yours. It's a long time ago now, but I still remember the feeling of elation at catching one of the 'mystical monsters' at last. A lot of planning and preparation went into it, and it was one of the biggest in the small lake at the time.

Don't listen to the easily bored, Jedward types that hang around AN, you just carry on enjoying what you're doing, and get some good mixed fishing in while you can. The time will come soon enough, when you have no option but to fish for single species. :( Enjoy the diversity, that's what it's all about. :thumbs:

Thank you all for your positive comments!... :D I've lost fish in the past where I was too aggresive with it, so now I tend to use the anti-reverse and back wind when I feel it pulling too much for the hooklength, I try to learn from my mistakes and thankfully this time it worked!... it was nice to feel like I landed it due to looking at how I played fish in the past and failed...

It pains me to say it but I think John is right and it might be best to enjoy good mixed fishing when you can find it.

 

The Carp thing can always take a back seat, it's not going away any time soon and to quote Brandon Flowers you can always dip your feet once in a while ;)
