Where does a feeder full of pellets sit?

 

Are you saying "groundbait" refers to bait that suspends in the water column?

 

Can you make your own pellets out of the same substances contained in groundbait?

 

Would a feeder full of - - - ohh say - - - maize or hemp or lunch meat be "loose feed"?

A silly response maybe but wouldn't it be easier to just use small pva bags ?

 

You can pre prepare them, keep them covered and just hook one on each time you cast.

It would also have the advantage of very obviously being a loose feed delivery mechanism with no groundbait if some moaner comes looking.

No. Its just one of those linguistic things. Loose feed by any sensible definition is groundbait but in the context of UK coarse fishing, "groundbait" usually refers to a grain (bread or biscuit crumb) based mix with or without flavourings, sweeteners, samples of the hookbait and other feeds.

A proportion of fisheries ban groundbait because some people have a tendency to ball in huge quantities and if it goes uneaten, it can cause problems.

 

If the ban in on bread based binders, there is usually a way around it.

 

When I was younger, we used to fish a very clear lake with a groundbait ban and got around it by mixing cooked hemp, mushed up luncheon meat and the soil from clay molehills into balls with a few other bits and bobs. Continual "feeding" with a stream of small balls quickly coloured up the water and after an hour or so, the fish would be feeding confidently despite the bright light and otherwise clear water.

I usually scald micro-pellets for a couple of minutes - 2 at most - to soften the outside of them and make them sticky. I also tend to use boiled hemp water and include some hemp seed with it.

 

It seems to work quite well for bream - surprising as angling lore says that hemp is a no-no for bream.

I fished the UK during the heigth of the "peanut ban". Never so many peanuts go into lakes in my life as during the "ban".

Just pour boiling water over them until u see it come through the gaps between the pellets. leave for five minutes then smash it all up with a bit of wood. Been doing this for 15 years of carping. Cheap and effective.

Thanks for the suggestion but - I don't really want to smash the pellet up and end up like making paste!

 

I tried at the weekend by pour the pellets into the bowl and added lake water and left it for a few minutes and then drain the water off. I managed alright by using a method mould but found out sometime when cast out the "some" pellets on the feeder came off the feederframe and also found out that the stickyness bit wasn't right as when the feeder enter the water the pellets came off the feeder frame.

 

Have anyone tried using the richworth pellets bond powder to make it sticky as lot more?

Hi Andrew, I have not used the Richworth one but I have used something similar from Sonubaits called Stiki Pellet and that does make a difference. The more you use the more it binds to the feeder but I tend to find if using halibut or trout pellet a quick scolding in boiling water is enough to make them bind very well. But the sticky pellet addative is good for other forms of pellets or if you want to add other stuff to the pellet feeder such mix particles, boilie chops, hemp, corn etc. I assume the Richworth stuff is the same stuff.
