Recommended waters for a new starter

Hi,

I'm a new fish to the waters and was wondering if you could recommend a good swim for a new starter.

I live in the Essex area but only have a temperamental Fiesta for transport so don’t want too travel too far.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi, Cliff,

Welcome!

Well, I'd normally suggest you contact your nearest Tackle Shop(s), which in your case might just be:

Hornchurch Angling Centre and/or Essex Angling in Ilford

Your nearest fishery is probably Raphael Park Lake ... maybe good for starters!

Enjoy your fishing. The rivers open in a couple of weeks, too ... yippeee :)

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.

I am as I said very new and didnt even know what tackle shops were local so thanks to you DG.

I was given all my tackle by a mate who's dad has just past away and wanted the stuff to go to a good home. I have always wanted to get into fishing so this seemed like a great excuse.

Mat, I live in Romford so Southend aint that far, just have to coax the miles out of the car. :-) Any recomendations would be great.

All my thanks,

Cliff

Well the place nearest you that I fish regularly is slough house lake in Bulphan, lots of carp, mainly smallish ones but the odd double as well, generally come out to ledgered boilie / luncheon meat etc, but theres also a very good head of roach rudd perch and bream, maggot/bread/corn fishing with a waggler in the margins will catch you a good bag, and maybe the occasional carp too ;-)

It does get very busy at the wekends - midweek it's not so bad, especially if you walk around the other side from the car park

The lake is at the top of China lane, which is off the A128

theres a map here

Although I have not fished it myself everyone in my local tackle shop recommends Nupers fishery in Tysea hill Stapleford Abbots near Romford. It is a good mixed fishery with some surprise golden tench. I keep meaning to have a go but never get round to it, as there are so many waters near to me. If you do go let me know how you get on.

take a look at my blog

Hi Cliff, I add my welcome to AnglersNet but I must say that while the internet makes it easy to acquire the information you require, you are really missing out on a lot of enjoyment by using it at this stage.

I hate playing the part of "the ancient" and saying, "when I was a lad etc, etc", but in some ways I have to. When I started fresh water fishing, there was nothing like the Internet, but there were tackle shops where I could talk to anglers face to face, and there were ordinance survey maps. I studied those for hours and visited every water I found on them. Fishing was allowed on some by virtue of joining a club or paying for a day ticket, some could be fished just by asking the owner if he would let you, and at some fishing was not allowed, though if you approached the owner properly it was possible to get into quite a number of those too.

I appreciate that there are fewer waters to be discovered than there were in the days of which I am talking, but it is still a lot of fun doing your own research. It is exciting to find a lake on your map, go and look at it and quietly walk round it if it is allowed. Even if it is a well known water owned by a club, at least you have done the work your self and believe me, that really does add some interest to your fishing!
