Ferox trout

Eddie:

Permision to ask a question sir! Look I've got me hand up"

Where you trolling deadbaits? Maybe char?

Oh dear that was two questions, maybe I will get shouted at again.

Eddie, I know you were trying to be helpful.

Three methods which worked for us:-

1/ Deep diving plugs ( charr and trout coloured patterns.) 2/ Live baits 3/ Mounted (on Archer flights) dead baits.

Trout baits, (I would have used charr if available) or the local salmon hatchery may provide smolts.

...but, its not just the baits, its how you fish them - DEEP!

Salmo Trutta Fario is generally regarded to be the proper non migratory Wild Brown Trout.

Salmo Trutta is the term for all varieties of Brown Trout including Sea-Trout and Ferox.

It is believed that Browns at a point of thier devlopment split into groups of forage feeders, surface feeders, Cannibals and Migratory sea running fish etc.

All these fish have the same DNA pattern and the ability to "transform" into any one of these Trout types. There are many different variables that may dictate which of these lifestyles the young Trout embarks upon. Some waters have enough variation in habitat to allow for many types of Trout to exist in one location. Loch Garry being one of them.

All Trout are capable of withstanding a gradual change in salinity so migration is feasable by any one of these varieties at any point of thier life although the transition almost always occurs at an early age.

Ferox can usually be found at a similar depth to Char. This could be at a depth of over 100 feet. Ferox can usually be differentiated by the large eyes, huge tail, distinctive Kype and unusual colouration. Lack of sunshine and the almost exclusive fish based diet are partly responsible for the metamorphosis.

OK Eddie, point taken - I'm sorry I over-reacted to your original post.

Andy Macfarlane:

Good point Andy, and certainly that applies,(and quite rightly too) to wild salmon.

However, a fishery that includes a licenced salmon hatchery is "in possession of smolts" legally, and presumably can legally sell them for use as bait on their own fishery? Many water authorities sell live trout for pike fishing on their own reservoirs.

It isn't upto the fishery. They don't make by-laws. Possession of Smolts, no matter where they come from are illegal to have in Scotland. Having Smolts on you is punishable anywhere in Scotland. You simply cannot possess them....period....even if they are dead.

I know fish farmers grow them, sell them etc. but they are liscensed to do so and only to other farmers and fisheries. They cannot sell them to some punter looking for deads or livies.

If Joe Bloggs turns up ANYWHERE in Scotland with a live or dead Smolt, Atlantic Salmon eggs or Salmon dough. etc. he will be prosecuted. I,m not making this up for christ sake. If a Bailiff turns up and finds you using any of these baits you will be prosecuted too. Just telling you before you get 5 years in Bar-L.

Don't sat I didn't warn you.

The only exceptions to the Salmon offspring rule are the new Pacific Salmon eggs found in shops. Although legal at the minute, I,m sure they will be outlawed soon enough.
