chesters1 - considering the money and hours Elton puts into his site, I'm glad to know he gets so many free offerings. He certainly doesn't tout them later though. Shucks, I'm not even sure he is fishing enough these days to be able to do a proper review of goodies he gets.

For the rest of it - some "sports" are big business and certainly there will be lots of advertising. Annoying at times but money talks.

Think though of the sports where you don't see adverts or stars touting their sponsor's products. I can't remember ever seeing a curling star praising the brand of broom he uses. Don't remember ever hearing a rugby player going on about the bandages or antiseptic he favors.

the rugby players dont need to thats where product placement comes in (damn just advertised rugby ) (curses just advertised a school)

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Sorry, but I'm going to play devil's advocate here. As anglers, don't we all know that a sponsored angler is going to push their sponsor's products? I would have thought it would follow that if an angler says 'I used a 0.07mm Drennan Team England hooklength', then we know that they're using a 0.07mm hooklength, which doesn't have to be Drennan. Or if someone says 'I'm using Fox bite alarms' we know that we don't necessarily have to use Fox. The moral: just ignore the brand!

Surely we can see that these anglers are saying they use these products because they're sponsored by them? Surely also, shouldn't we expect the anglers to give something back to their sponsors, many of whom are effectively paid to be full time anglers?

Maybe I see this from a different perspective, as a match angler.

Bloody hell steve, I thought you'd forgotten where AN was, nice to see you on here again

Reading this thread was bizarre for me, especially as I'd forgotten that I'd contributed.

Since reading this I stopped buying the magazines on a regular basis and took more notice of what everyday anglers on here said.

My catches have improved and I've bought gear that the magazines never mentioned and found out just how wonderful having a browning revolver really was....(sorry chesters couldn't resist)

There was also a thread at that time about how the internet would never replace the magazine, it has for me, and a year on this and a couple of other sites has lead to massively improved catches. The net is my fishing bible.

As to product placement, I tend to trust the people on here, except Mr Roe 'cos he's from the wrong side of the penines, so for me I no longer have a problem with product placement.......just so long as AN manages to keep an inipendant stance.

Phil, I've been heavily exam bound. Finished that, and now am expected to get a summer job. I am fully aware that in the 'real world' I'd be working all year, but things are getting a bit stressful.

Anyway, how are you and what do you think about this kind of 'tackle touting'?

A point that you appear, maybe, to have missed is the magazine editor that is after advertising revenue. He has to please the advertiser, and sometimes its blatant beyond belief!

Why else do I think Angling Times is raking up the close season debate! Advertising and advertising ad nauseum ad infinitum.

Advertising may reduce the cost of the publication, but it does hike up the product price! Such is the nature of the beast.

Trustworthy reviews, now there's a challenge for the popular media!

it made me chuckle (?) a few years ago, when I wrote an article giving details of a particular bait recipe I'd worked out and tested. In the same article, I described exactly the anti tangle end rig I'd designed. About two years later, Both appeared in another story from a "sponsored" angler, as products available from his sponsors at the time.
