The rise of social networking must be playing a part.

 

Lots of facebook pages easily set up targeting a particular club, water, area, method etc. and arranging meets so that a small more intimate social clique develops and people spend their internet time in there, chatting, messaging, posting pictures etc

 

Its a bit like pubs, your small friendly local, or biker pub etc., rather than a large public place full of strangers.

 

Then there's the blogs!
