Oh Oh ITS STARTING EARLY THIS YEAR!

Well its started again already! Despite having my "Pike head" still firmly on my thoughts have already started turning to this new seasons campaign! Incidentally my "Season" I suppose "starts" once the pike gear has finally been put away and the Bream/Tench/Eel gear comes out!

Past few years have been dogged by ill health stopping me getting out as much as I used to and leaving me very frustrated and somewhat depressed! Health problems still remain but a recent acceptance that I do probably suffer from a wheat intolerance (that makes me very sleepy and lethargic which is obviously not a good thing on top of my ME that causes me to get physically tired very quickly!) and so "quiting" bread etc and a new MO to allow for my other problems I'm feeling a bit optimistic for a better year!

As such Ive now started to plan this coming seasons campaign with a lot more enthusiasm and hope than Ive felt for several years. I'm pretty sure that my methods for the Bream and Tench wont change much just the way I apply them as in time spent. The big "buzz" though is for my Spring Eel fishing! Due to the fact that early in the year (April time) when I first start after them I only need to effectively fish hard for around four hours which gives me plenty of time for baillifing duties and rest.

Ive a couple of new things/improvements to try this year. Some Ive been meaning to try for ages others Ive only just had suggested to me by other more "current" eel specialists than my self (Thanks Mark,Dave and Kevin!).

But the thing that will make many of you long term AN'ers laugh is that its sticky backed plastic,Squeezy bottle and Araldite time again! yes back to the "Ultimate Bobbin" quest again!!! Not for the Bream this time though as after all the previous experiments, hundreds of pounds spent at model shops and B&Q with the odd trip to A&E to have super glued fingers unstuck etc I honestly dont think much can be done to improve on Paul's (tincatinca) "Swinghams". I love the four he very kindly made for me and have used them in quite a few un thought of situations to good effect

wingham19-132011002.jpg

(Please note this is Bruv's set up as I mount mine on the rear and wouldn't be seen dead with rod rests that weren't perfectly aligned!)

This time its for my eel fishing! Previously Ive allways used the classic Fairy Liquid tops (modified with foam and isotope of course!) or my light weight bobbins when using JS rigs or simple rear drop back indicators for CD rigs (these need to be fished under tension so would just keep dragging bobbin type indicators up). As there is a good chance I might end up only using CD rigs this year I want to get the rear drop backs sorted. I say sorted as in previous years (and very noticeable on Wingham's Carp Lake last year) Ive noticed that the slight change of resistance of the line pulling out of a line clip was often causing the eels to drop the bait. So I am planning to dispense with the line clip full stop and try a different method of release. To tight to buy four of the relatively (well at least for four!) expensive but excellent Zandavan Rollover indicators so I'm looking to utilise bits Ive already got to achieve the same thing!

!

So anyone else out there started playing around in the shed/kitchen table yet for the coming season or any bits of tackle your still not 100% happy with? Or are the majority of you "normal" and dont experience "Pre Season Tension"? :D

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I've gone back to normal bobbins

I think next season will be very different and a lot less intense than previous years for me. I think circumstances will mean the bream fishing has come to an end, so it'll probably be a bit of daytime perch and tench fishing. We'll see :)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Just watched the video Budgie posted of the roll over system. A good deal of further thought has now gone in to it and a lot of mods have been applied since the original version was launched resulting in a system which in principle to my mind covers virtually all situations where a short drop bobbin indication is required. The real strength of it to me though is the simplicity of the line release. I also think that the system could possibly be further improved by incorporating sliding adjustable weights and shortening and streamlining the overhang at the back end to reduce the possibility of line getting caught up however, the concept is excellent and good look to the inventor who has obviously put a lot of time and thought into it.

My only indicator plans are to remove the bobbin heads from my long bobbins to recycle on to short drops. Going to put it down old skool next year :D The rod pod might even come out, but I do like having the rods spaced. The one Wingham Bream I had last year was on a standard bobbin, I only had 3 long drops and that fish had to take the bait on the wrong set up, it took loads of line from the spool before I picked up the rod and there was no way it was a line bite. Plus all my runs at night from Tench have been screamers and as I fish bolt rigs at night, I am starting to think I am over complicating things with long drops. For me the only time I think I might read things wrong is during the day when I sometimes hit single bleeps or movement on the bobbins.

I don't think I will be doing enough time to justify fishing to suit any one species and so a total catch all approach with a standard "Carpy" set up seems the most appropriate way to fish.

Here we go again his hormones playing up again and it always happen at this time of year again!

No, seriously I started mucking around for the last few weeks and been buying a few things and decided to start the conquest of my first pi$$wings this year than doing any tenching! ;)

I am doing the same thing as I did last year! Just get my bait in the water and hopefully in the right place and be hauling in some good fish and also hoping to spend a bit more time down there!

Growing old is inevitable but growing up is optional

The thing is there is always something that stops you getting down as often as you would like, I don't think I have ever done as much fishing as I would like but that's life :D

Hehe, with regards to bobbins, imo, you cant beat a wine cork and a simple running paternoster. Cut half way down lengthwise. Tie a loop of mono to the base to stop it swinging too much in the wind when you loop it over an angled bankstick. Insert mainline 'tightly' into the cut. I use a drop of about 18"-2' straight down from the reel, angling up to the first ring. This is the angle I have the bankstick at. I use a bite alarm to audibly alert me. I use circle hooks too. The cork effectively effectively acts as a semi-bolt rig when it hits the first ring.

Working off 24 Eels last season, only 2 deephooked. 1 was a bootlace.

I usually use an 8' (yes, feet) running link to a 2oz leger with an 18" distance from leger stop to hook.
