Cleaning a reel

Recommended Posts

It's time I cleaned up my match reel, it's got very dirty of late what with groundbait and general muck.

Is it advisable to wash the reel with warm soapy water then carefully oil/grease the reel where required?

I don't intend stripping the reel but giving it a grease on the prominent parts.

Help please!!!

Yes warm soapy water will be fine. I tend to use an old tooth brush to get dirt out of those hard to reach places. It can be a good idea to give it a wipe over with some WD40 too. After asking a similar question about a reel that I managed to get sand in I was advised to buy some teflon grease which you can find at halfords in the bike section. Very good for regreasing any moving parts.

Just rinse the reel under cold water. Soapy water may remove grease from parts of the reel you might not be able to access.

The Teflon spray Anthony mentioned in GT85. It's a super slick lube that also gives your reel a nice shine if you use it as a polish too.

I use it for all moving parts on my multis and it's great stuff. 3 quid for a tin that'll last as many years.
