Fish Growing!

Elton

Recommended Posts

I don't pay my fish much attention over Winter, but cleaned the pond filters out yesterday and noticed that some of the carp had grown immensely over the colder months!

It's great to see, as most were either purchased as fingerlings, or born in the pond.

I've also had some ducks return. Great for my little girl to see, messy for the pond!

I'll have frogspawn soon, I think.

Spotted a frog on a border yesterday and decided to point it out to my daughter.

As it hopped away, I piped up, "Err, look. That other one is giving it a piggy back!"

Ziggy, she's not even two years old yet :)

And yes, just about any fish will eat tadpoles.

Got about 20-30 frogs in our pond now, expecting more in the next few days

The fish will eat the tadpoles, but enough will survive to become adult frogs.

I've had masses of frogspawn in my pond for the last few years. At the moment I have a large clump that must be at least a foot across.

Yet in all this time I have never seen a single tadpole.

Odd or what ??

I put most of my frogspawn in the top pond, & inevitably there is a steady trickle of Tadpoles going over the waterfall into the main pond when they become freeswimming.

My three Orfe have got their timing down to a fine art, they are laid up just in front of the waterfall ready to fill their boots BEFORE I see any of the Tadpoles swimming free.

Mind they must taste nice because nothing shifts them for weeks & weeks once they start coming over the fall.
