I have all the fishing gear I could need, but regularly get stuff using the little http://www.cheap-bargains.co.uk/ site I set up to locate local deals on eBay. Just punch your postcode in and search through a virtual Steptoe's Yard :D

Last purchase was two brand new bucket seats (I'm into cars!) for £26. These were still in the box they were originally bought in! I'm not sure whether to use them, or make a bit of profit on them :)

My stepdad recently furnished his new house using that site. It's great for larger items.

This weekend is a 'free listing' weekend on eBay, so look out for more people clearing out tackle from their sheds and garages. As you've proven, the bargains are out there!

I have picked up a few Shimano Baitrunners RE series for around £20 each and I recently got a Shimano Beastmaster 2.5lb TC Specimen rod for £36 all including postage. ebay is great when you don't really need something and can just put in a lowish bid and it's nice if you win but does not make much difference if you don't.

A guy I sometimes work with has a much loved motor bike, last summer it caught fire when the wiring loom shorted out, he checked on ebay and found an unsold completed listing for the exact new wiring loom he needed, an email to the seller with an offer at the original starting price of 99p was accepted, iirc he said it was over £100 new retail, that has to be a bargain.

I’ve never really managed to nab a ‘proper’ bargain through bidding on e-bay, if I see something that looks good loads of other people have usually seen it too and they all bid at the last knockings. Not long ago I saw a wonderful little device which attached to a centrepin reel and allowed you to rotate the reel through ninety degrees so it would cast like a fixed spool reel. It was early sixties I think, boxed and unused and bidding was dormant at a fiver until the last couple of minutes. My ‘bargain’ then shot up to about fifty quid

My most satisfying purchase was a Lythe centrepin last December, I paid over the odds to avoid a long wait but four months later an identical reel sold for £100 more than I paid. I’ll never realise the potential return of my reel but it’s nice to know that my impulse buy wasn’t totally stupid.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

Most of my bargains have not been from ebay. Just yesterday I bought a rod bag and tackle box off a friend of my uncles for a fiver. I considered that a pretty good price B)

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."
