The only thing I am worried about it my tackle before I embark on a river trip. I have a light float rod and a feeder rod at my disposal. So I think I need to invest in a rod more upto the job. Also need to get a carryall as a seatbox isnt suitable for a roving session. Plus I need some sturdy boots.

Anyone got ideas on a suitable rod to get. Have been looking at the John Wilson avon system one

That sounds sensible for a river fishing starter kit. It should take care of everything from bleak to small barbel. Best not to go off on a buying spree until you reach a point where your kit is no longer coping with your chosen type of fishing. If you get barbel, carp or pike fever then you'll need something a bit heavier.

Just been to Veals in Bristol and picked up a Korum bag for tackle and bait and also picked up the Amalgamated club book. Chatted to one of the guys in there about where to go at the moment and the river is quite low so a few stretches arent going to well. Very helpful in there.

Those Korum bags are great - I don't know how I managed without mine. The only thing I don't like is that the lids on the bait tubs are a bit flimsy and don't fit too well. If you have small pellets that escape into the insulated main compartment of the bag, they get into the folds of the insulation and can be a right pain to get out. Apart from that...

p.s. The Korum double rod holdall is a good buy, too - holds two made-up rods plus shelter/brolly, rod rests, landing net, etc.

Welcome Andrew,

Living in Bristol you're spoiled for choice when it comes to river fishing. I was born and raised in Bristol but haven't lived there for many years now. When I was young(er) I did a lot of fishing along Crews Hole road past the tar works. I had more success though out at Kelston with odd visits to the Chew at Compton Dando and the occasional foray down into Somerset. As I say, I haven't lived there for a long time so I can't give you any up to date information but I think you've done the right thing by joining the club. There is plenty of fishing to be had within easy reach out through Keynsham, Saltford, Bath and Bathampton. Also, I seem to remember reading a magazine article some time ago about how good the fishing is along the Feeder canal and in the docks these days.
