It aint fishing weather!

With snow on the ground and the soon-to-come snow melt going into our rivers and lakes I think fishing is off the cards for a little while. I'm going to write off this weekend and try again next weekend. Anybody braving the snow to get out on the bank?

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

With plenty of snow around at present I've no intention of going fishing in the short term but in the mid 80s there were many times when I fished in these conditions before the snow melt and did very well with big roach. The dates around 19-21st January were often something special for roach, and of course this is a prime time to get snow.

I find the bigger rivers very hard when it's like this, but the little tributaries can still fish well for chub, assuming you can get to the river! I love being out in the snow, wrapped up against the cold, wandering about after chub :)

It's not as hardcore as it looks Phone! With those clothes and boots you don't get cold, you're always on the move, and the session is generally quite short, and you're somewhere where you know you'll get a few bites. On the bigger rivers it's a different story, and to be honest I no longer bother as it just isn't worth it. On the little rivers the chub are easy to find - any slow or slack water with a 'glassy' surface, ideally near to branches, tree roots, etc. (like under the rod tip in the first photo and to the right of the rod in the third). Quietly drop a lump of cheesepaste or bread into the fish holding spots, give it 10 minutes, then move on if nothing happens!

That's the key when fish cold, keep on the move and look for the smaller rivers. I use cheespaste as hookbait mainly, coupled with a small cage feeder full of white crumb, with a dash of birdseed. Look for any rise in temps to give you a chance.
