Pike Gags

(preferably the edge of a table in the context I was taught it, but needs must the edge of a boat, a large rock or railing will do)

Sometimes a table a rock or a boat are simply not at hand, my weighed polished and leaded piece of antler always is.

Surley bashing a fish's head in with a rock we have just picked up isn't the image we want to project?

Having to kill a fish we didn't mean to ain't a good start to begin with!

I don't think I've ever had to kill something when unequipped to do so which couldn't be dealt with using a bank stick, though.

slit the gills, simple.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

I don't think Emma's policy of carrying a priest is a bad one, mind. But definitely needed if you're going to use a gag, 'cos you're not going to be putting them back in good nick.

I agree that something has gone wrong when one has to dispatch a fish other than for eating or bait, ''but let me tell you something you already know, The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place, (Balboa 2006) The last fish which I considered that I should have killed, rather than ones which I decided to kill, was a pike of around 12lbs 3 years ago. Although not deeply hooked, lure caught, it clearly showed signs of distress when I returned it and despite my kneeling in the water in my chest waders holding it upright for over an hour, it died, on reflection I should have gone with my instincts and knocked it on the head, the mind boggles at the thought of someone beating an animal with a head like that to death with a bankstick. I didn't have a bankstick anyway, I don't take 'em lure fishing, nor do I leave rocks around the boat, or take a boat or table when shore fishing.

I can't understand in these days of supposed 'fish welfare primacy' that there is so much resistance to carring a tool designed for humane dispatch. We don't take our old sick and in pain dogs to a vet who refuses to use humane euthanasia methods under anycircumstances.

I must admit, I have never had to kill anything that size. I do have bank sticks robust enough to do that, but if I had to I'd probably find a large rock instead.

To be honest, on most waters round here, being seen killing a double figure pike because you didn't think it would go back would get you something between a ban and a lynching. Bit different on the wilder waters you fish. I used to like living and fishing in Cumbria.

The lake warden did happen along and I quite openly told the tale, we ended having a chat about pike cooking. better than throwing it in a bin.

I can remember when we were told that a gag was an essential item for the 'modern' pike angler. I still have mine in an old box somewhere, not used anymore. We used to wrap masking tape around the pointed ends so that they wouldn't stick into the pike's mouth.

Not that masking tape fixes the main issue with them anyway. im sure ye have seen the inside of a pikes mouth :D
