No, you pay the licence fee so that the BBC can broadcast around the world giving the poor and the disenfranchised the idea that ours is a land of milk and honey that will welcome them with open arms.

Now that's advertising !!

when you buy a new telly the company inform the licencing dept of your purchase ,if your not listed as having a telly then detector vans hover around your address just to make sure ,pity such vigilance was`nt made on more important areas such as the channel tunnel and the such.

We had some bloke knock on the door last year cos we didn't have a TV license. Seems he had a list of addresses for people who hadn't bought one.

Anyway of the 5 others students i share the house with i'm there the least so we were putting it off. Anyway the guy gave me a caution (? you do not have to say anything but...) anyway i filled out a direct debit form and they let us off.

The direct debit thing is weird it just keeps on going about £20 a month for 12 months? They charge you for next years license as well? I had to phone them up and inform them we won't be living there next year and they said i had to ask the bank to stop the dd and when the BBC write me a letter i have to reply with a reason?

its seems guilty without charge if your name isnt on the list then your trying to evade the fee and someone knocks ,i have heard that some people actually have no set but i expect they are far and wide between :) we continued to pay the DD even whilst home-less for 2 reasons ,we had a telly but no address to register it at and it was a pain arranging the DD in the first place ,you pay 6months in arrears and 6months in advance to get the DD going i think.

Ah, the TV Police know...but they at least read you your rights.

So what would happen if you found a working TV in a dumpster (tip?) or at a flea market (boot sale?) and just kind of stuck the plug in the wall, turned it on, and wiggled the rabbit ears around? No recepetion?

if you found a working telly in a skip then alls well if you found one and your name isnt on the list of households with telly licencies then theres a chance they`l find you by monitoring you from a detector van or handheld device ,the penalties for not having a licence along with dog fouling ,playing ball games in the wrong place etc are draconian its probably better to mug an old lady to get the money to pay the licence ,if you get caught the fine will be probably be less

saw a writer on bbc this morning getting ten minutes of advertising free for plugging her book (she was on itv later) surely if the bbc were unbiased every writer releasing a book that day in the world should get the same treatment from the bbc or does unbiased mean something else nowadays

I worked with a guy who didn't own a TV and he had actually written to complain about the number of times he'd had people knocking on his door to check if he had a TV or not. They have a list of all addresses that don't have a licence and it seems don't always believe that people can live without one!
