The only 4-letter towns with A-L in their names that I can think of are Sale, like sultan said, and Deal.

The periodic table gave no clues. There are now 118 elements. Number 20 is Calcium (Ca) and number 3 is Lithium (Li).

That would make AL-CA-LI..no..no..help..

Well I read AL2O3 as Aluminium Oxide also known as alumina - still no help though...

 

Deal has been the answer to another clue...

This is definitely it for tonight. You probably noticed that it's Barnstaple with a 'p', not Barnstable with a 'b', as I wrongly guessed. You were being too kind not to say so. :o ) But working on the "....stable" theme, I thought of Whitstable, thinking that "whit" might be an older form of "whittle", you know, carving wood. Couldn't find any reference to this anywhere though.
