There are 2 60 metre "gas holders" just across the road from me. Gas holders or gasometers are not really used to store gas, at least not since North Sea gas came on stream. They are used to control and equalise the pressure of gas over the network.

 

Scotland has got plenty of oil storeage, thanks to the Americans.

the gasometers were the bit on the side ,yes they regulated the pressure (the weight of the top pushing down on the gas in the holder) but even a smaal amount of stockpile is better than nothing ,there was moans over aldershots one being dismantled it had been there a very long time from when town gas was made before we all had to change jets when natural gas came on full time.

aldershot as most towns did produced its own gas and heated water from its destructor now long gone.

it seems this new version of gas has a limited lifetime compared to the victorian method ,not as deadly though and certainly not as smelly as the old stuff

i will have to look up when all the stoves needed new jets but i wasnt very old at the time.

hmmm surprisingly it dragged out for some time so obviasly the delivery pipes we now see are after 1977 country wide ,also it started later than i thought to

I remember ours being done when I was about 11 or 12 Chesters, that would be 1971 or 1972.

i remember the old stove and the smell as it was the only heating in the house and the chilblains sitting with your feet in the oven defrosting them (smile)

my old man was terrified of heaters i remember a paraffin one catching fire when i was 4 or 5 from then on they were banned and we never had any heating until i was 17 when we fortunate to move to a centrally heated house (bath rooms as well) even the ascot was never used .well when he was on leave anyway

i remember before this being sent to a shop in holmsdale road bromley for a gallon more than once ,i presume being so young the owner relented as bills were paid "payday" .i can see the heater as if it were yesterday ,bowl heater with a glass container for the paraffin ,nice while it lasted

This is the second topic I have locked today on the grounds of personal abuse which is irritating on two grounds.One Im on holiday in Maderia and have better things to do.
