Phone, you are right up to a point. Tench are members of the cyprinid family and yes they are slimy but in a sexy way not slimy in a icky eel way. Tench are like a poor mans Carp :-)

 

 

They are not mate! I hold tench in far higher esteem than any fat, bloated carp. Tench are beautiful, mysterious and they fight like hell. I just hope Andy_1984s pre-baiting campaign works out. He's been keeping it up for a wee while, with a little coaxng from my end but it's paying off already. The roach and rudd (surprised at Rudd showing already) have appeared on the swim and I reckon it'll just be a mater of time before the tench and the carp find out what's on offer too. I'll be joining him soon for a serious session to see what we can turn up. Some early season tench would cheer me up no end.

Been on a pre-baiting campaign for a few months but only really ramped up my efforts the past month. The end result is hopefully a new PB carp or tench.   Signs of the baiting are already looking go

lol @ poor mans carp, I hold them in higher regards than carp. Magnificent looking things so they are. Sod commercials for them though, you can see some have that same flabby undercarriage that carp g

No they aren't mate. Carp are lazy, fat, genetically selected pigs that make a mess of nearly every water they inhabit. Tench are natural, mysterious, notoriously hard to catch unless the density is high and they're up there with rudd as the most beautiful of all the UK species.

Yes i heard there was just a touch of frost that night....Some idiot was fishing for eels in -6C i believe !! :cold:

Not all carp are like that Andy ;). There's still plenty of proper ones about.

 

My enthusiasm for the perch is waning a little. I've loved every minute of it but to be honest I want to be back on the river exploring rather than fishing the same beats of canal.

 

Dales, I'm also very tempted to have a go for a big tench soon. I was going to leave it another couple of weeks but after a conversation with a mate who was carping over the weekend it transpires that there's been quite a few caught recently. More tench are being caught than carp on one particular lake despite it only holding a small stock of them.

 

"Bottom's up" has started at our lakes today but I can't work out if it's a positive or negative. It's a sign that Springs finally on it's way but also that my days are about to get considerably longer. :(

stay away from carp puddles and you get a good lean fighting carp.

It's great to hear so many stories of Tench being caught. I have tended to agree with those who think that its the increase in day light hours that trigger them to start feeding rather then just the rise in water temperature. I have had Tench early in past years but my thoughts where that this year with the constant cold it might just have been to much for any real Tench activity. Sounds like I might be wrong, well hopefully I am. The first Tench of the year/season (depends how you count) is always a little special. It's good to hear so many are off the mark already.

Yesterday started off looking like a blank, did a little trot round the lake to see what was happening, gave time for the fish to find the feed. Then finished with a half dozen small carp and perch (about the 1 lb mark) and tiddlers just using the whip rod. Mind you it did get chilly, so started to keep an eye out for a Weddup turning up!
