Leylandii trees.

The UK is nothing if not well organized. Take a look at This site that "advice and information for Hedge-Victims, drawing on the experience of thousands of members".

So if your neighbor maintains a horrible hedge that has a bad impact on your property or your lifestyle, these folks can offer suggestions and maybe bring you up to speed on current legislative anti-bad-hedge actions/bills.

Sorry for delay in posting Ive been away! As Colin says parish councillors have little clout in planning matters but youre right to be cautious, a shed in your face may well be preferable to all out war, but making enquiries about you are allowed to put up in your garden to the District Council will just ensure you are armed if the conflict escalates!

If you dont want to wait for Beech (mature 8' ones are about £20 in our garden centre) you could consider Hybrid Willow or poplar which can grow faster than leylandii. the golden form of leylandii is a bit slower but has all the same draw backs, if you do plant them cut then at least 2 times a year to keep them in check. Oh and the cuttings dont rot down BTW!

Good luck

Whatever you do, don't even think about planting leylandii. My dad had one that grew taller than his house, and needed the army in to blow it up. Well almost.

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

the best hedges are yew ,and not so slow growing as is thought ,if you do have to plant leylandi ( a poor hedging plant) its usually planted because its a fast grower , my old boss bought a load of 5 foot ones as an instant hedge against a new fence , we also planted a row of 2 ft ones else where in five years the small ones had outgrown the big ones and made a far better hedge mainly because of the lesser transplant shock of the small ones ,also cutting them back to 2feet BELOW there intended height gives a better hedge as rather than keep cutting the main stump back every time your only cutting the headers

they should be outlawed as as a hedge they are far to invasive above and below ground and as fire wood they are useless except in closed boilers

Well - we all have our moments of being human.

And John had a terrible experience with mauve when a youngster so tends to react violently to the mention of it.
