Dave, sorry if it sounds like I am having ago at you but I am just trying to point out that I don't see what Korda are doing wrong.

Maybe I have been duped :-)

Like John, the young anglers I come across tend to be rather good and often don't have all the gear but have picked up a lot more knowledge then I ever had as kid often from TV shows, free DVDS etc. Sadly I don't think we see enough young anglers around.

I saw a bag of Nash rock salt last week! Guess what it contains erm, salt!

I thought Guru were the Korda match side of things?

Much like Preston / Korum or Fox / Matrix or Drennan / ESP.

Yes Korda make some very good kit (dont they all) but are heads and tails above the rest with their marketing.

Would prefer to watch their programs/Dvds anyday over the likes of Maver/preston etc as like others have said: They educate into why/how/when/where etc instead of blabbing on about how good their kit is.

I may be wrong but were a few of their vids also sponsered by Mainline (Bait), Daiwa (rods and reels) and Delkin (alarms)?

PS - I use quite a few Korda products but also use many many others.

I know a company that even sells it's own salt!

For a comparison try watching an episode of Korda Thinking Tackle and Fishing Gurus and see who is pushing more of their own products? I am not knocking Guru tackle as again they have the odd good bit of Tackle and so why would they not push it?

Different floats for different folks!

Thanks Rudd, that would explain why Guru makes some nice kit.

Mate. I never saw it that way at all :). One of those internet things...

I have been worried about you and John for some time now. I do not expect any Hanky pancky in a few weekends time. Only if i am invited !

So far my Carp performance is very good so far at Wingham, my Tench a bit Average and my eels a bit oof a disaster which is odd as i thought it would be the other way round. Perhaps i should stick boilies on and get a good Eel. What i am saying is i am not interested in your slippery eel as i have heard about you with eels you catch. And i am sure i heard a Yelp last year when budgie showed you his in the dark.....

I know I'm considered as a bit of an old fart, and often accused of living in the past, (that's natural when there is much more past than future), but I can't help thinking that your last two sentences are connected Stephen.

First I have to say that I am not against any specific angling company, as most will know it's the size and scope of the commercialism in general that I don't like.

Although i don't get to fish as often as I would like, I still talk to anglers, young and old. I get the feeling that many of the youngsters, (not all), learn too much, too fast, and not always the correct things at that. Some youngsters I know are 'experts' in their teens, (or so they think). They can tie almost any rig they've been shown, they can cast to the horizon, their PB list outweighs mine, (in some species), but they can't think for themselves. They fish 'by numbers'. When asked why they use a particular method it's because "that's the way ***** said was best". I was always taught to listen to anyone's advice and try and improve/adapt it to suit both yourself and the water/conditions of the day. In other words 'think'. Think why it works, often and more importantly, think why it sometimes didn't work.

When I was into match fishing, if we were going on an unfamiliar water we would have a couple of trips there first. We not only went to find out what would catch, but also what would put the fish off.

I think this is why we hear so many "what's the best bait?" questions, because some youngsters are so entrenched in the "method", that they think the only reason they aren't catching is the bait. After all the 'method' can't be wrong, because a celeb' recommended it.

I'm not against anyone giving advice, but my advice would be, try it, but think why it works, and don't be afraid to change/adapt it just because some (often sponsored) celeb' says it's 'the' way to do it.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

It must be one of those regional things. Like I see my local waters being poached and so do other anglers in different areas but lots never experience it in their catchment. I can honestly say I do not come across these "instant young expert anglers" and never heard kids raving about celeb anglers. I believe many do watch the DVD's and learn alot from them but there are a lot of duff stuff out there that says use tackle X and rig Y and you will catch. However, Korda promotional stuff is heavy on the why to do something and not just the how.

I fish commercials from time to time for certain species and the young anglers I see are float fishing, feeder fishing, stalking etc. I really do not see the carp rod, bite alarm kids that others seem to. I often see dads behind the whole set up not catching while their kids are on more basic kit and getting bites. Yes I have seen kids with the full Carp set up and if that is deemed wrong (not saying it is) Then surely it's the parents fault for buying it for them. Or is it the tackle companies responsability to provide good parenting? Fishing is not just a hobby, it's a business. A business exists to make profits, thats it. If it can do some good along the way, thats very nice. for those who do have a problem with the "carp Machine" I can't even start to imagine what you make of some of the big multi national corporations.

Some young anglers are lucky to have a parent to teach them the alleged "proper way to fish" but many do not. For those with out a mentor, who need to find their own way watching thinking tackle will give them plenty of fishing information.

Tackle companies just promote and sell tackle, they have no mandate to teach the rights and wrongs of fishing. Some do like Korda put out very good information, what people choose to do with that is not their responsability. I don't even see why some one should have to be a good angler. As far as I am concerned only 2 things matter, Do you fish safely and do you enjoy it. After that, does it matter if you fish by numbers or never go on to be what some might call a "good angler" If some one is fishing, causing no one else any harm

and fishing in a safe manor, whats wrong with that?

I do love a bit of AN snobbery, we always fish better then everyone else and we always are so much better then those stupid carp anglers who no nothing :-)

Stephen

I'm surprised you see my thoughts as being "a bit of AN snobbery" Stephen, it wasn't meant as such. I agree that as long as you are enjoying yourself, then it's ok with me. I do however see youngsters come into angling, full of 'sponsored' advice, fish artificial waters, and achieve much more (weight wise) than I (and my peers) ever did. This 'catching' I witness is often without any foundation, similar to getting a game for an X box. The initial excitement is there until they finish the game, then it gets boring. Many of the youngsters I watch/listen to, get to a point where they are just 'going through the motions', and after the initial 'rush', they lose interest. Which gets me back to the point you made about, sadly, not seeing enough youngsters taking up angling. I don't think it's a case of 'not taking it up', it's more a case of 'keeping the long term interest'. I believe that variety, and the appreciation of angling and it's place in the 'natural' world, helps to keep that interest.

Commercial interests may not have a responsibility to help youngsters widen the scope of their angling, but I think they have a moral duty to angling to do so. I would hope that the thing that keeps them in business, would mean more than a 'quick buck' to them.

There used to be a mill pond just down the road from me, (now a housing estate). I used to go down as did a lot of youngsters, and local old guys. We could tell the ones who would carry on fishing, just by their approach. Some would refuse to fish it because the carp only went up to about 5lb, "I can get much bigger at ****" was the usual reply. Others would try the 'usual methods', find they couldn't catch, and rarely come back. The ones that kept at it, were usually those with just basic tackle, who asked loads of questions, and actually wanted to know the answers. I still see them now, some have gone into carping, some match fishing, some keep mainly to rivers, and so on. They all enjoy what they do, but are not 'closed' to other disciplines, and still going 10-15 yrs on. These guys are the future of angling, and if it was more widespread, then I would feel better about angling having a future.

LOL...A man true to my heart young Dale.....

I have to say mate I do agree that there are less young anglers around and that's I think they feel the cold more because they spend time on play station seriously though it's thir parents will not let them go. Think about it, you let your sons of 8 and 10 go and you have just heard that Jimmy Tarbuck may have molested kids so what with that on top of thinking there still around always anyway you have a fishery full of blokes smelling of maggots, dodgy beards and gays called John and Dale

Sadly this is down to the Media as it all went on back then (well we know now with all these celebs in the 60s and 70's being charged) and it’s cemented it to many parents’ brains. I don’t even see a quarter of the kids that walk to school than in my school days.

However there are a few I have seen with floats etc but some with all the gear. One of the lads I mentioned earlier had 18lb BS line and a 3.50TC rod.

I think too that Angling clubs tend to have more kids. I was a member of Tonbridge but had to leave after 2 sessions as it’s not just one kid but groups of them as maybe the parents think they are more safe on a club water than a day ticket as their names are down as members . In this club I can assure you they had the Kitchen sink with them and I won't go into detail but their fishing skills and etiquette was nowhere to be seen.

After a 15 year layoff I see a massive difference I mean didn't maggots catch fish? So what's with the plastic then? More money that is a dabatable subject as half say they don't catch and thee other half do.. A plastic worm. £4.50 for 3. You can buy a pot that wriggle for that. A bait boat that you fill up and move towards your flag like a boat you control on the beach front pier when you tried to sink your kid sister’s boat by ramming her.

It happens, Technology will always make things 'Easier' and in fishing a carp angler throws his boilie that he need not change for days, then starts up his little speed boat and un leashes his depth charges as in boilies and then sits back and a fish self pricks itself. He has 60lb braided line so just reels in. I recently caught my carp with cunning and 4 hours of homework, spod pre-bating and baiting. I still don't class it as real fishing but it works but I never feel a need to parade next to it. In fact s stated the second made me spill my tea and I was not happy....
