10-09 tench from Wingham!

Last week the carp record was raised on the Carp Lake to 51-10. Now the tench record on the Main Lake has been upped to 10-09.

The captor was Mark Cunnington, who moved swims after a fruitless first 36 hours and recorded tench of 8-08 at dusk yesterday, followed by an 8-07 at 6.30 this morning. Then just over an hour later another take resulted in the new lake record.

Despite Mark beating my own record I'm over the moon! And as you can see from the photo so is Mark! In fact Mark is having a cracking season as he started off with a 43lb mirror from the Carp Lake, his second from there in 6 months.

This is only Mark's 2nd tench trip, and you may recall the first 3 fish on his first session were all successive PBs at 8-07, 8-14 and 9-08, followed by a 6lber. It was this swim Mark moved back into yesterday.

The fish fought hard but has a strange lump on its body and so should be very easy to identify in the future. It was 24ins long with a girth of 20ins. As you can see it's one of the yellow-green ones so will have been born in Wingham, and its long tail suggests it still has some filling out to do.

That is a lump, though I think Ermm's (smaller) fish from the fish-in looked more of a monster.

Amazing fish, well done Steve and the captor.

It is actually bigger in length and girth than the fish I caught but mine was prettier :-).

Well done again :-). Maybe an 11 this year? :-)

Mark has added to his tally: 7-02 and a 9-10! What a session!

The average size of the tench this year is really remarkable.

Remarkable indeed. I must try and get one. You must be absolutely made up with these results.

Wingham itself is remarkable. Not only is it a wonderful place to just sit and fish, it is highly likely that you will get a fish of a lifetime.

(p.s. Steve, while sitting there last month I looked as those willows again from my side of the lake. I now know what the problem is).

Cheers, Mike.

Let me know when you come down to do the tree survey. The next month or so will of course be the best time for the tench.
