PC help needed

My CPU was running a bit hot so I decided to upgrade my CPU cooler and have just fitted an Arctic freezer Pro7 Rev2 cooler.

I took off the stock cooler and cleaned the face of the CPU with alcohol then fitted the new cooler as per instructions. It went very easily.

On starting up the PC the cooler fan works but it is about the only thing that does.

The PC is running, all fans are running but the screens are blank, no sign of anything.

I can't find any obvious reason like loose wires or plugs knocked out so what should I be looking for?

Any suggestions welcome - please!!!

I know this will sound like teaching granny to suck eggs but...

...double check power and video cables to monitor very carefully ensuring all securely connected, also make sure graphics card fully seated. Make sure power button to monitor is on

it is usually the very simple things that cause issues

Try putting the old one back, to eliminate the new one. Does the hard disk fire up, and do the other connected bits show signs of life.

black screen with no post boot is almost always CPU related; assuming your not getting any post beeps etc as well.

remove new heat sink and fan and ensure you have installed and seated cpu correctly.

if the cpu has pins ensure you didn't bend any when you wiped the old heat sink paste off...also be sure if its a newer cpu "core2duo or I range" that all contact points on the reverse of the cpu are fully clean and not dirty etc

final check is cpu socket on the board itself; check for dust or fluff that might be hindering contact points; give it a good blow out just in case.

also check you connected the new fan to the cpu fan socket on the motherboard instead of one of the auxiliary fan points.

Thanks for the suggestions

I didn't take the CPU out, I just cleaned the surface carefully with tissue and alcohol.

I connected the new fan to the same pins that I disconnected the old fan from.

I thought about the video card so I tried connecting the screen to the mobo onboard video, no change.

The new cooler came with thermal paste pre- applied. If I remove it I will need to apply more thermal paste and I don't have any. There is no-where locally where I can buy some either.

On starting up there is one beep.

you wont need to reapply thermal paste after this short period..especially as the system isn't posting correctly and therefore the cpu isn't reaching a high temp to flow the paste.

personally I would never clean a cpu whilst its in its socket..thats asking for trouble. modern connections on I series or core2duos are not pin based but are spring loaded connectors based in the socket itself..even the slightest pressure in the wrong direct could bend one and cause it to short across to another one.

you need top get back to basics to diagnose.

remove all data cables and disconnect power to all storage devices.

remove video card

remove any further pci cards etc

remove ram- blow slots out and refit

remove cpu fan and remove cpu from socket.

clean connections on base of cpu carefully and blow the cpu socket out carefully.

refit cpu and cpu fan

test boot of system using on board video.

if that works, refit video card and test again

if that works connect storage devices and test

Hi Kiri

Done that with no result.

No boot, just black screens.

New CPU?
