Perch fishing

I have a question too.

Does the commercial-style perching (e.g. fishing prawns/lobs/deads in little well stocked ponds) work as well in summer as it does in winter? What's different? I assume the other species are more of a problem, especially carp, but do you catch perch too?

My summer method is to act as if I am after a "match weight" and feed continuously - get the small roach really boiling at each ration of loose feed, and float fish a perch bait (lob, prawn, fish) up in the water (say about 2/3 depth) on the fringes of the feed area, It has caught a number of perch for me up to four pounds.

Simple, but it works.

My suggestion was aimed specifically at the question (re commercial-type waters). A situation where the perch are rarely fished for deliberately, as most anglers are trying to catch carp

I might use it as a default method in other waters, but in a river I would place much more emphasis on searching for where the bigger perch were - using lures. Lure fishing by its very nature covers more water and increases your chances of location.

In big pits I am often baffled (as are most anglers if they are honest) but what success I have had (in summer) is due to seeking out where the undertow might take my bait. ie fish where the undertow peters out. Winter perch are something else!

Canals /dykes - best places seem to be within inches of the fringing reeds/flags/weeds on the opposite bank - provided there is a couple of feet or more of water there.

All fairly general observations, but a reasonable starting point for most waters.

What about time of day in summer? In winter, in my limited experience, there seems to be a flurry at dusk but fish turn up all through the day too.

I would think that would depend on the amount of fry present.

Saying that I have caught Perch on Corn and Wheat in the summer!
