Dads

I don't think I've ever made any secret of the fact that I come from a 'broken family'.

Today, I went into town with my wife.

In Clinton Cards, they had a load of cards in the Father's Day section that had headings such as "You're Like A Dad To Me". These cards are targeted at "step-fathers".

Isn't it about time that society woke up and realised that "step-fathers" aren't 'like' a dad? In many cases, they're more than a father - my 'stepfather' is my dad, end of story.

My 'stepfather' had a lot more guts than my biological father - I don't know that I could have done the same. At least my 'stepfather' knows who my daughter is.

Sounds very much like my own situation Elton, my real dad never sends me a birthday or christmas card and I doubt he even knows the kids birthdays. My step father is the complete opposite and loves my kids dearly.

My 'Father' has never bothered to come and see his Grandchildren despite the odd phone call when he's totally hammered promising to do so. My problem is that my Wife comes from a very close family and my oldest has wised up to the fact that she has another Grandad and is now playing on it to a certain extent....kids :D I've said to my wife that I'd rather the meeting never happened now. He's missed the chance as far as I'm concerned and the kids wouldn't gain anything by meeting the pillock.

I agree Elton - My wife never new her biological father he decided to leave when she was born. And so she had a stepfather who WAS her Dad and what a lovely and kind man he was too.

What always used to bug him was the horror movies on tv or video or sometimes just in drama programmes that came out where you can almost bet on it that if the murderer or villain is a parent its always the Stepfather or 'Stepmom' he used to get very frustrated and say "see thats what i am up against"

He died tragically when my wife was 17 but when my wife talks about him 15 years later in conversations she will always say "My Dad.........

My parents split when I was 18.

I now have a daughter (18 months) who has three sets of grandparents.

The only grandparents who see her often (most days of the week are my wifes parents).

My stepdad doesnt even bother with his own kids (three from two failed marriges)

My stepmum has two sons who now have their own kids. These three grand kids get seen alot more than mine!!!!!!

How am I going to explain to my daughter why she has three sets of grandparents when she learns to count and about the facts of life!!!!!!
