Just before this season opened, we were all urging each other to try something different, so after a few chilly (NE wind) and unproductive sessions after gravel-pit perch, I welcomed a change in the weather this last week.

 

With the change came an invitation to fish a far-off salmon river with an old friend, so a change of venue, a change of style, and a change of quarry seemed to be just what I needed.

 

Didn't get a salmon, but a decent trout (eaten) and a decent pike (returned) highlighted a most enjoyable session. The wild life was fantastic too, mayflies, an otter, pied flycatchers, loads of grey wagtails, redstarts, wood warblers, a kingfisher, two sorts of owls (barn and long-eared - the latter rather rare these days) and a green sandpiper already on its way south.

 

Came back to find the British Lions had thrashed the Wallabies, and Andy Murray had won at Wimbledon.

Didn't post up the deep-water (a thousand feet !) snappers from our Jamaica trip, although I did mention them on the sea thread - had a computer crash that scuppered my then picture gallery (have since managed to retrieve the pics)

 

We did come across one peculiar species on our recent trip. Wondered if it were some sort of troll, but trolls are usually found under bridges. This one was perched on a gatepost !

 

 

 

Note the notched incisors :g:

Excellent!

 

I've been having a nice change too, floater fishing for carp at local gravel pits. They're very attractive waters and for the last couple of years have suddenly become very quiet and peaceful. As they're only 10 minutes away, it's really nice to just nip out for an hour or two when the urge takes me.

 

I was very close to nailing a big scaley old monster yesterday until the gulls found me and dive-bombed the swim to death. In the end I had to make do with a rocket-powered 13lb common. Fantastic fun on a barbel rod.

Its a new coat !

As I was a guest on this water, I did not wish to identify it - background cropped out for same reason.
