Tinca61:

To eat humble pie means to be humiliated, to admit others know best or are superior in some way.

The saying comes from the days when the Lord of the Manor and his fellow huntsmen feasted on the spoils of their day's hunting. They ate prime venison, while the servants and other of low standing had to make do with a pie made from the umbles of the deer - its entrails, liver and heart.

A 'Hummel' is, I think you'll find, the term used for a male deer that has damaged of inadequate testicles. They do not grow proper antlers each year, often just a big soft lump on their heads. Some people call them 'Moss heads'. They would indeed feel humble compared to the other males.

Perhaps humbling could be a term for castration.

Perhaps Humble Pie was made from the discarded organs of the act of castration.

Venison is my favourite meat. Especially if it is from the red deer or elk as our American cousins call it.

Our American cousins might some times refer to Wapiti and Elk in the same breath but our Reds are a lot smaller species, with no palmetted antlers.

Newt, lets have some pictures!

La plume de ma tante.

Okay...without looking them up, I'll have a guess:

..a cloister of nuns;

..a forum of apes;

..a catchment of jugglers;

..a daubing of painters;

..an exhibition of flashers..??

Sur le pont, d'Avignon...

Newt, lets have some pictures!

'Our' Red deer is Cervus elaphus

Wapiti or just Elk in the US is Cervus elaphus

in Germany its called Rothirsch or Edelhirsch but it is still Cervus elaphus

Do your worst Newt show me a Wapiti with palmate antlers and I'll eat my hat. :D:D

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
