Muslims detest pork because they believe pigs are filthy animals. Some of them simply refuse to eat it,while others won't even touch pigs at all, nor any of their by-products. To them, eating or touching a pig, its meat, its blood, etc., is to be instantly barred from paradise (and those 72 virgins) and doomed to hell.

How about a compromise , instead of bombin the cr## out of Iraq , we just drop loads of squeelin pigs on them and wait for them to surrender.

oooh thats a thought if were ever in conflict with india we can use cows , what other countries dont eat certain animals  we could rule the world ha ha ha ha

strange thing tho ,thinking about differences between religeouse practices if you had a nude jew and a nude moslem there is little difference , the only one i can see is that the "real "hardline jews have ringletts ,moslems have beards so do some jews but not all jews , moslems dont cut their beards but also the turbanned indians dont , both jews and moslems dont eat pork ,both practice circumcission (as well as some african tribes)

if there almost the same in habit and eating why the heck do they keep fighting :D

Now I could well be wrong here Yoxer, and please feel free to correct me if I am, what with you being an Academe and all that. I thought that the (or at least one reason) reason that neither religion eat Pork is because some clever people very early on in their respective religions development realised that if people ate Pork in those climates without refrigeration etc. they were asking for all manner of digestive problems. Thus they wrote this into their religious manuscripts and hence the modern angle and it's associated ignorance.

You're quite possibly right Chesters. Certainly in my book there is not much in the culinary world better than smoked or cured food.

Hey Tinca, they could eat pork scratchings instead. You can keep them out of the fridge for ages.

Not quite right there Yoxer. Muslims do not consider pigs to be 'filthy animals', they consider pigs to be 'unclean' animals along with dogs, ducks and some others. There are some parts of all animals that are considered to be unclean and therefore cannot be eaten. e.g testicles! So no prairie oysters in a halal shop.

No practising Muslim will touch ore eat pigs, pork, or any by-product as you rightly have said. However touching a pig or eating pork does not barr one to entrance from Paradis, nor is one doomed to hell, but will result in having to undergo several heavy duty cleansing rituals.

The blood of ANY animal is considered to be haram (as opposed to halal) and cannot be eaten or touched by a Muslim (so black pudding is out too).

From a purely practical point of view pigs would not be a very good domesticated animal for desert nomads. Pigs need vast quantities of water and suffer very badly from sunburn, not to mention the potentially lethal diseases that you can pick up from a pork that is not cooked properly. Eating meat that is a bit pink is always a risk when cooking with the low heat offered by camel dung cooking fires.

There are various other theories about why pork is unclean. Ancient egyptians were said to offer pigs as a sacrifice to there gods. Islam (and Judaism) prohibit the flesh of animals killed as sacrifice to idols.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
