best anti hack and virus protection

ive got a new system xp os still on dial up

came with trial macafee security

what would anyone recomend to make as safe as poss.

Leave it switched off.

 

If you must connect try Zonealarm's free firewall and AVG virus scanner, also free, though I think both have paid versions with knobs on.

Agree 100% with MickJ, get Zonealarm and AVG.

 

One word of warning.....if you have kids, do a regular check on what programs Zonealarm is allowing to have access. If they are like my kids, strange application names appear every now and then.

Im using the sygate firewall and spysweeper and have no problems.

I did used to use spybot but it doesnt get shut of certain spyware and it keeps coming back.

Oh and norton av 2003 is better than 2004 and seems more pc friendly.

2004 sems to disagree with a lot of pcs.

Yup agree with the above, AVG and Zone alarm are the best bets. Although if you have an old pc knocking about, turn it into a hardware firewall for even more protection

Zone Alarm Pro and NOD32 anti-virus is what I use, can`t beat it IMHO

i use zonealarm pro...no AV software (in about a decade)...good habits and regular patching negate 99.9999999% of virii behind a good firewall like ZApro..AV programs have a habit of slowing your machine down, needing constant updates and renewal and generally being a pain in the arse.

 

www.trendmicro.com has an online free virus scanner should you ever get something suspiscious.
