Disobedient mouse ?

Cranfield

Recommended Posts

I have a Logitech wireless mouse, which has worked perfectly for 2 years.

I operate XP Home.

For the last week I sometimes have to issue "click on" instructions twice, before there is any action.

Example; I click on the Internet icon and nothing happens, I click on again and it opens.

The same for accessing websites listed on My Favourites.

Its intermittent, I've changed the battery and no other configuration has been altered, so its hard to understand.

It might be nothing to do with the mouse.

Any ideas, please ?

Have you altered the "click" from single to double? Just a thought :)

I have checked the setings and they are OK and there is nothing obstructing the signal between receiver and mouse.

I now think it may not be the mouse, as I am trying to open programmes/websites and although it shows "Done" on the line at the bottom of the screen, its not opening the programme/website.

It won't open GMail either.

I have done an AntiVirus scan and run all three Spyware Killers and there appears to be no problems.

I hope its not something too complicated.

I have swopped the right left button functions and it doesn't appear to make any difference.

Its really strange pressing the "wrong" button.

It still won't open my GMail.

The website address appears briefly and the it states "Done", but nothings happened.

This has occurred with the odd web page, or Forum item, in the last week and I have just ignored it, as its not that important.

But, it is important that I access my email.

Is there some way I can adjust the settings to slow down the logging on of a website, or page ?

I also have this happen from time to time, although I don't have a wireless mouse. Restarting the computer has always solved it so far.

Otherwise you could always try reinstalling the mouse.

Steve, I am now almost certain, its not the mouse at fault.

When I haven't been able to access an item in the past, like you, I restart and things are usually OK.

I have rebooted several times and even turned off the PC and left it for a couple of hours, but its still the same.

I know GMail is working, becauise the symbol tells me that email is there unread.

I don't know quite what to try next.

If you go into mouse settings in the control panel you can test your mouse to prove the switches are ok & adjust the double click speed if you wish.

As for 'non responce' of icons etc, first try one left click to see if the icon is highlighted and then a right click to view its options, you can then click on open to run from there. If the program then runs ok I think you need to adjust your double click time.

If the program still won't run you may have an invisable message window that is 'hanging' the system.

Run a 'process viewer' type program at the same time and see what's running - you may well see a 'rundll' or 'msgserv' come up which if you close then the system wakes up.

Then look at what runs said 'rundll' and find out why its using up your system resources.

It may be a problem with the shortcuts etc or a program that has not been fully removed, might be an 'auto update' function or an autoload that you could disable in the programs options - could even be a sound file that runs when the program loads, maybe it can't run because of a sound card or file realocation problem.
