I have a 19" LCD flat panel at work and a 19" CRT at home. Can't tell any real difference in display quality and as noted, the LCD certainly takes up only a fraction of the space.

Note to any who are using that sort of monitor, do your eyes a huge favor and go to

where you can make online adjustments in the display that will hold after you disconnect. It makes a huge difference in how clear the LCD display is. Does pretty well for some CRT displays as well.

I note that Dell recommends XP Pro rather than XP Home. Is there any advantage for us?

Pro has lots more security options available and from what I see, is a little more stable than Home.

Home was created by taking the Pro version and removing some features and I'm not sure they did it quite right. I know that if folks have problems, it is lots easier to work with them for a fix if they run Pro rather than home.

If the extra money is not a problem, I would certainly recommend you get the pro version. While most of the 'advantages' are more applicable to a business network, there are enough for a home or small office user to make it worth while.

Jeepster, we tried DABS but they can't get anywhere near Dell's special offer.

It looks as we'll be getting XP Pro and a 19" flat panel monitor.

The price has gone up from £301 to £524!

Peggy, just a cautionary thought.

I have quite a few friends that find my 19" monitor too large.

They can't focus on all the screen, without moving their heads.

I believe it depends how close you want/need to sit to the screen and the configuration of your prescription lenses (if you wear them).

It would be worth going to a Retailer and trying a 19" screen out.

Thanks Cranfield. We're going to try out my brother's flat screen that I think is a 17".

I bought a new machine from mesh http://www.meshcomputers.com/updated/index.htm earlier this year and i was also looking at dell.when i phoned dell to tell them i wasnt going ahead with my order they reduced the price by £100 and offered to upgrade the size of my monitor from a 17"tft to a 19"tft. I then phoned mesh and they increased my monitor size for free aswell so i stayed with mesh.A couple of phone calls got me a 19" monitor for the price of a 17".

The only thing that put me of the dell pc was the pushy salesman who phoned me everyday for a week to try and get me to buy of him.
