a wheel problem

Saw that there was a window of oppertunity in the weather for a spot of boat fishing today. Phoned a few people to see if they wanted a trip out fishing. In the end it was just me and my step farther.

In the rush to meet the tide I neglected to do my checks properly.(After all the trailer lights were working).I have a 20 mile journey to the nearst slip, but after 17 miles there was a strange squeaking noise from the trailer. The problem was soon spotted after a quick pull in to the next layby. One wheel nut missing and the other three loose :( . Needless to say the the wheel was F%£$ed.

Not to be dismayed, tightening of the wheel nuts and a very carful journey onwards saw us at the slip.

The day was pretty uneventfull (apart from me forgetting the map for the chartplotter). We ended up in the estuary spinning for bass where I had many bass follow the lure right up to the boat but no hook ups. Still there's always another day.

Basicaly at the end of the day, no matter how rushed you are you should always make time for your checks on the trailer. The journey home took over two hours. Maybe I was being over causious but with a dodgie wheel it was worth it.

the wheels should always come first and the bearings greased frequently ,still you will remember next time ,did you have a spare.

ripped off a bogy wheel before now but the biggest menace is internal rust ,saw a chap on the slipway at pompey with his wheel and stub completly gone ,it wasent as easy as tightening wheelnuts but a major rewelding,if it had failed on a motorway who knows the outcome

Always worth the final checks. Round about 1990 I was periphally involved with deep sea world. Their marine biologists brought their boat from Queensferry to Dunstaffnage intending to launch at Dunstaffnage marina. We were waiting on their arrival. They eventually reached the marina with a 3.5 ton lorry towing an Aussie, 28ft Cougar Wildcat catamaran with twin 150hp evinrudes on the back. They unhitched for the night and next morning hooked up to the towbar to reverse the boat to the slip. Could`nt help but notice that the safety chain had been ignored in their haste.

It was pointed out but they said all was well.

First bump !!!!!!!!! Ever seen a Wildcat do about 6 or 7 knts astern on dry land, downhill towards a small drop off?? Anyway the sea going capabilities of the boat were magnificent, stable and with a top speed in good weather of about 28knts. The aerodynamics were another thing. The small drop off was encountered, aerodynamics were crap and the Wildcat reversed, airborne, into the marina skip, cushioning its fall on the twin outboards. All over a chain and twenty seconds effort. (stranger things happen on land)

funny ian,

i heard it's like standing under a cold shower tearing up £10.00 notes

Unbearable, isn't it? The suffering of strangers, the agony of friends. There is a secret song at the center of the world, and its sound is like razors through flesh.
