The fish apears perfectly ok to me (unfortunately!) but seriously well done to both the angler and the fishery.

Without apearing superior just how many 40lb fish let alone 80lb fish have you doubters actually seen then? The way you casually decry this fish as a fake makes it sound as youve seen loads......I bet most of you havnt seen one in the flesh!

Good spread of pictures of this fish with enough different angles to make me confident enough even though admitedly the first wasnt to hot.

Holding fish at arms length? Yeagh it sadly has become a very common trend in the carp world. Not too worried about the exagerated size this gives the fish as it is normally quite easily spotted and I think looks daft! but my real worry is for fish safety. You can hold suprisigly heavy fish like this for long enough for a quick snap, especially with modern self focus/metering cameras but you have zero control over them and if they kick then all is lost. Im a big bloke (23st+) so even a properly/safely held 50 looks smaller than some extended 30's but I dont care cause held close to me I dont drop em!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

look at the fishes mouth in every picture. Its in almost if not exactly the same position.

Holding something closer to the camera makes it look bigger than it is. if you can keep focus alls the better

holding a dead weight of 35 kilos out in front of you like that is hard at the best of times, but for a sustained period let alone a live fish covered in slime is nigh on impossible.

Looks like a perfect common too. not a scar not a blemish.

Too good to be true, because it probably is.

Apart from the first shot, the rest of the shots do look genuine. I suppose the acid test in deciding if the catch is genuine is to consider the angler and his reputation. I understand from previous postings he is well respected within the carp world and therefore unlikely to perputrate such a hoax?

What is surprising, to me, is that the fish was caught in a Northern European Water, you don't suppose the fish was 'farmed' in any way do you? Could account for the perfect, look of the fish.

Just another point has anyone not taken any notice of the web address? CarpGate? as in WaterGate?

Perhaps its just me being ultra cynical but I really dont think this looks like a real fish, plus the fact of where it was caught. Nah, might be in the minority here but for something to be caught of this size in a water more northernly than GB and to see the dubious pics this smacks of a hoax. Not a particularly good one at that.

My initial comments were about the new world record mirror but they could equally apply to the common as well.

JBee I spent six years in Germany and can assure you that both the pits and rivers produce big carp. Dont forget that the River Waser

(the sailing Club area near,Nienburg) once held the world record.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I was wondering if in accordance with german law about not returning coarse fish, this one ended up on the table.

All of a sudden feeding the 5000 with 5 loaves and 2 fishes becomes plausible!

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

To be honest it doesn't matter fake or real. At the end of the day I go fishing for my own pleasure and enjoyment, to forgoe cheating in anyway just to "look good" seems rediculous. To me I personally think that the shots are of a real fish. I think that there is a slight mess-up of the scales, above and slightly forward of the root of tail.

Fair play to the lad if its genuine, but i would be very ashamed if it were false, and i also think it would portray a slightly negative atitude towards carpers globally

Whatever floats your boat...

See how I float mine, here
