new line?

Recommended Posts

For years I've been using Berkley Big Game but this season I think 8lb will be too strong. So I need to to find a new line in 6lb. It has to be:

Not sensor

Supple

Tough as old boots

Not sensor

Not crazily expensive

Not sensor

Like you Rich I am also not a fan of Sensor. I used Big Game extensively for specimen fishing up until a few years ago when I changed to Gold Label Pro Clear and have not looked back since. The main reasons that I like it so much is that it is very limp and supple, casts well ,good resistance to abrasion and breaks virtually on the nail. The only problem is that you cannot get it below 8 lb b.s. Another possible alternative is Gold Label Pro Gold which is nearly as good as the Pro Clear in terms of suppleness and can be obtained down to 6 lb b.s For lower bteaking strains I am still a die hard Maxima fan.

What is it for ? Float fishing or feeder ? Float fishing wise I use 4.5 lb berkley trilene and find it's amazing for knot strength. Feeder I use 8-10lb mono varying in brand but changing to braid this year with a fluorocarbon leader

Kappa,

You need to research (google) the tensile strength of lines you are considering. Berkley always understates their lines. I think I would also compare line size before choosing. Look for line with the lowest diameter-to-pound test ratio.

I'm a bit confused Rich as the line you've described your looking to get has all the traits of sensor.

Hi Tigger,

I know you are a fan but I don't find sensor supple in fact last time I got some I was so fed up of it I binned it all after a single session.

I'm with Paul. My choice in the lighter breaking strains is Pro Gold. This is stronger than the stated breaking strain. In the higher breaking strains I too go for Pro Clear. But bear in mind that this is rated differently to Pro Gold (which comes from the same stable), with the breaking strain being more accurate.

Both of these have good suppleness and very good abrasion resistance.

Like Rich I've never been that impressed with Sensor. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, and it's a decent allrounder. Additionally it's very good value for money. However Jim Gibbinson's bench tests showed that there are better lines on the market, albeit at a higher price.

Also bear in mind that if you increase suppleness you normally reduce abrasion resistance. And lines with a low diameter to strength ratio (i.e. tensile strength) usually have poor abrasion resistance.

Haven't tried pro gold rich, but I have plenty of bad stuff to say about pro tough! I don't know how similar they are.

Kappa,

Well - I think it is very British. I seriously doubt it is extruded in England. I believe it will come down to personal choices. Why not start with something "home grown". That's where I'd start given a choice.
