Mike, I'm almost speechless or whatever the internet equivilant is ! Brilliant ! :D

For this to happen when you were, to say the least, down in the dumps about the fishing, is great and gives encouragement to us all.

Well done

Size of that mouth!!! What hook size were you using mike?

Scotty

I used a two hook ledger on a 3ft trace. A 4/0 three inches above a 1/0 longshank. The idea being, whiting will take the smaller bait, ( i caught 9, including a two pounder) and any bigger fish will take the whole lot, both hooks. A long trace is best, as a Cod will drop a bait that feels strange. I lost two big fish like this three weeks ago, because I had whiting rigs on. I got them half way in, and lost them. That's why I made up the ledger. I will have to use 5/0 kamasans in future I think. To be on the safe side.

However, as I said before, a 10/0 would have been about right, with half a mackerel on it. This fish could have eaten a whole whiting with no trouble.

It only had a big crab ib it's stomach, and I'v been thinking about that, as I do.

Why only a crab? Where were all the usual baitfish that can be found in a Cod?

Are they struggling to find any, and is that why these bigger less agile fish are forced to move inshore this year? There are several reports of double figure Cod here, but hardly any small ones.

It's just a theory of mine, but there must be some reason why they are coming in this year.

I think I will just nip out and try for another one!
