My best bag of roach is one fish!!!! It was the first ever fish I caught and to me it looked massive...my dad said it was at least a pound....a decent roach even today. It was caught from a park lake that is now closed to fishing(flaming bird sanctuary  ) and it was renowned for quality roach. I have been hooked ever since that day 24 years ago...so if it wasn't for roach there would be one less angling nut on this forum!!! :P

My best 'session after roach was when every single one I caught weighed over 3lb, eventually resulting in three exceeding 4lb. I don't think I'll ever beat those fantastic roach sessions at a fantastic water - by far my best roach fishing ever experienced in Europe.

Probably the most exciting capture was my first ever English roach exceeding 3lb, caught on a large chunk of bread from a Hampshire gravel pit, way back in 1968.

My best bag was a 70lb bag from the river Scariff in Ireland, fish averaging between 10oz & 1.5lb.

Mine came from this river too...guestimated at between 80lb to 100lb. Lovely river......Kept on getting fish attacked by Pike all day, once just as I was about to pick one out of the water.....I uttered an expletive or two out loud. :D

I can't even remember how many I caught but I was a novice fisher, Ist or 2nd year at new grammar school. So must have been over 40 years ago. We arranged a match v other anglers in the years above us. The venue was the Mill Pond overflow stream, one of the headwaters of the Sussex Adur. It had been pouring for days and the little stream was a raging, muddy torrent. We all found holes up and down the stream and I settled in one which offered any fish present respite from the current. My first lesson in watercraft I guess. I had also just read about stret-pegging, does anyone still do it? ( its not something one does in private with a consenting partner) and it did the trick.

Well, it all went right for me. I had what I can recall a huge bag of roach and 1 clonker that we all agreed was over 1lb but the old scales were not too accurate then. I won the match, my year group won the sweepstake but the older lads would not pay up and because we were smaller could not enforce it.

I mainly fly fish now, my love of small streams has always stayed with me and I still remember that bag of roach.

Di! Ecce hora. Uxor mea me necabit.

I don't know what size the bags would have been, but my best ever Roach (and Dace) fishing was on the tidal Thames in the 50's. I used to trot mainly hemp and maggot (or Gentles as we used to call them), or Elderberries in the autumn. I also seem to remember getting some good Roach legering with cheese.

Alas, as Globe says....... these are just memories now :(:(:(

Steve, I nearly wet myself with excitement when I landed that first UK big 3lb roach...I don't tend to wet myself so often nowadays, so I guess you could say that I was more pleased the first time I caught one! :D;)

Due to my disability i don't fish rivers more than once or twice a year.

I have a local pond that throws up roach of about a pound/pound and a half Roach every chuck in winter. No keepnets allowed but I guess I catch about 40/60lb of Roach, skimmers and perch every time I fish it.

Method is top 3 or 4 of your pole, single maggot on an 18 hook on the bottom.
