It's very hard to say anything much at all about the sources and composition of Beowulf. Or "bowf", and my Scottish born and educated wife calls it - she and her fellow English Lit students didn't much like studying it. I rather like it, and bought Seamus Heaney's new translation, but she pulls a face at the mention of it :)

You can say that again Andy. I vaguely remembered a story from Yorkshire similar to the lambton worm. I found it on Wiki.

There seems to be a few around with varations of the same story. I like ours because in true Yorkshire style, he killed it with a good kick to the 'arse gut'.
