How far do you go?

For me, it could be anything from a 10 minute walk to a 5 hour drive each way.

Much of my fishing is local rivers and lakes, but once a month I try to get a session in which is likely to be a 250 mile+ drive each way. Now I am working civilised hours, I feel more inclined to get out and fish rather than socialise.

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

Ken, the zander were introduced into the UK in the 1800s by the Duke of Bedford at Woburn Abbey. Since then they've been released/have escaped into the river network and worked their way north, south and west. The catfish are Wels from mainland europe brought over (mostly illegally I suspect) and put into ponds and fisheries.

Argyll, I think the dear old Duke was responsible for the cats too:

Probably right Davy but since the EA started cracking down on illegal immigrant cats, I suspect that a lot ended up being dumped into rivers all over the UK. I just wish the Duke of Bedford had stocked bass instead.

Do you just fish local waters or do you travell a lot to differant venues?

Interesting to see if many of you travel very far to venues or prefer to just stick to the local ponds or rivers.

Best wishes

Tigger.

I Live in North London. There is Carping round Walthamstow way but I have heard it's skant pickings even in the summer. Rumour is it's overfished.

I like Hamstead Heath, but it is also a slow days fishing although there are Carp there up to 32lb and Pike upto around the same.

Have tried the Grand Union Canal, caught an average of half a fish and 6 carrier bags a go. It's a mess and a disgrace round there.

Therefore I end up getting on the train and meeting up with my brother in law Greg, we go to the Kennet and Avon canal for Pike in winter and Carp in summer, and he's also not miles away from the Thames.

Therefore I am quite happy to travel when I know there's bites to be got!

So you dont bother fishing the Thames then?

I have'nt got a clue how the Thames fishes but i thought it was supposed to be quite good , or have i miss heard?

I dont know why but i always imagine the Thames being a dirty place even though people reckon it's super clean now, i know i'm probably wrong but thats just how i picture it in my mind.

If anything the Thames is too clean now, especially the upper Thames from Cricklade to Lechlade, the whole stretch looks sterile to the eye. If the water does not have sufficient plant growth, that in turn produces a lack if natural food for the fish. It is a 'problem' that effects a lot of our rivers, and is a sad irony :(

My suspicion is that lack of flow is more to blame there than excessive cleanliness. I've had a couple of sessions this Summer on the Thames around Cricklade (walking distance) and there's been hardly any water in the river.

Water that look's sterile would say to me that there's something badly wrong with it, and no weeds is a sure sign of that. I can't understand it thuogh as i keep hearing the Thames is teaming with fish and is super healthy.

Its the Upper Thames Tigger I am speaking of, I am no expert but it is quite a problem with some rivers, water abstraction seems to be the main culprit .The Bristol Avon also has the same problem, however the effect is more noticable at the 'head' of rivers. Shame really beacause that where the best fishing is mormally found IMO
