BASS AND COD IN BEFORE OVER FISHING

I can remember my school summer holidays - it never rained!

I can clearly remember walking down my great grand father's brick garden path and the large iron tub he used to put the chicken sh*t in to dilute it before watering the garden with a watering can I could not lift, I was two years old. ;):2:

I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. Anglers Trust PM

There were lots more larger fish, but not as many fish in total. We now have lots of small bass that if left to grow to 45cm could provide some decent sport.

I agree Sam, mainly off shore though, same as it did in the late 60's

There were also good numbers of decent bass inshore. Maybe not loads of the 10 pounders that were found offshore, but plenty between 5 and 7.

There wasnt the numbers of bass inshore in those days, there wasnt as many bass then as now, its not numbers really the bmp is trying to acheave its more better fish.

In the 60s me dad used to average 3 fish per session, most over five lb,

I wish some body would keep the score.

Sam's Dad has told me the same thing, but he's talking about a two or three hour session from the shore in the blackwater.

you are keeping score mate, aint ya?

I thoughrt it was simple, in ther good ol days there was lots of big bass offshore in places, and enough inshore to get a few decent ones each trip.

Now there are basicaly just zillions of small bass. If these little bass are protected then it could nock the good ol days into a cocked hat.

We still do get the odd good year, 1994 wasnt to bad inshore from my dingy, nor was 2003, before that 99 was good from the shore as was 96.

What we lack it consistancy, the bmp would increase the numbers of 45cm bass and in turn the numbewrs of better bass.

they will eat what the cod that have gone would have eaten.

A few years ago lots of whiting that were caught in the Blackwater were caughing up baby bass, so it will balance out.

Thats fishing, I doubt the BMP will make the slightest difference to that at all, Asking for cosistancey fisheries, I think it was Jaffa who said " you are asking the sun to rise twice a day"

The year classes have been inconsistent, but we've got a huge year class coming through now that, if protected, could lead to consistent fishing for a good few years. The one after it isn't too shabby either. The boom and bust mentality doesn't lend itself to consitency, ie, catch lots while it's here and suffer when it's not. Why not protect what we've got so it lasts longer and has more chance of producing another good year class?
