Google...Adders, up to 20cm, Grass snakes, up to 200cm

Grass snakes love water, Adders love dry ground

do a google search on dogs, may say something like "four legged kanine creature mostly found on land"

Must have been a fantastic site Marlin. I must say though it just could not have been an adder, If it wasn't a grass snake, then it is quite possibly a snake that has escaped or let loose. Five foot long is just too long for an adder, and thick as your wrist...just cant be an adder.

As kid I had a similar experience with a lizard, bloody great green thing I caught momentarily, no such indeginous lizard exists in this country, so had to have been bred here or imported. Theres a lake near Swindon that has a couple of resident turtles that have adapted well and continue to grow. Hope you can find the pic to prove me wrong though

Back fishing after a 28 year lay-off.

3.12.8 perch or 8.00 pike on thames at teddington.

The pike was the most fun as I was perching - no trace single hook and light gear.

Must've been at least 10 mins before he gave up :)

mine is

about 1 carrier bag of litter all year

no written warnings

the long awaited bog was delivered

i didnt have to go to the pond at 3 am to prove you CAN get your key out of the lock <_<

met Vagabond and TonyU :D

the most puzzling is that someone stole the spring loaded bolt from a gate , i replaced it with a scavenged bit of bailer twine ,i'v only found the gate open once since the strings been on compared to weekly using the bolt

Very very unusual to have an adder 5 foot long, they are thick snake but not long. The African puff adder on the other hand?! You say it had an unmistakable V, the adder is more known for its zig zag diamonds on its back. The Grass snake has a v and markings on its back but not so strongly. see here: http://www.arkive.org/species/ARK/reptiles...tml?size=medium

If it definately wasnt a grass snake then it could have been a smooth snake as they are longer than adders, see here http://www.arkive.org/species/ARK/reptiles...ella_austriaca/ but are very rare.

But I tell you what, if I ever find a what looks like a 5 foot adder there is no way I would pick it up, its so unlikely to be a UK snake that big that it would be more likely to be an escaped captive viper from another country :blink:

Your just gonna have to get those pics Blue marlin and put us out of our misery!
