Boat - Good News.....And Bad

On this site , they seem to suggest cutting the outside of the boat and working inwards.

From what Steve suggested and what Davy said here, surely it's better to attack it from inside the boat?

Yes, you definately want to attack it from inside. With what the previous owner has done to it, that's your only option anyway. They took a layer of plywood out from the inside, and that's the way it's going to have to go back.

yep weve replaced lots of wood over the years ,as was said if you can save the outer shell then little damage is done ,we replaced the rotten with marine grade (about 12 layers an inch-ish of wood if i recall) ply ,we then relined the outer -inner with a thin sheet (the fine stuff) of glass and a good coat of plastic to fill any very small holes ,we before re-fiberglassing the inner skin after the wood was screwed into place put 2 stainless straps each side and fixed them along the boats side (when chesters1 fixes he fixes to last ) then the lot was refiberglassed ,although not perfectly flat the job didnt look too bad .

with fiberglass resin its small and often in the mix ,buy a 100 cheapo paint brushes from screwfix as it easier to chuck them away than to clean them after each mix.

i wish digi cams were invented (well cheap anyway) as we would have had a set of "action shots to show ,unfortunatly the ones we did take were lost in the post via a envelope type processor

Even if it were available, it wouldn't be any good for your boat. The trouble is, what would have been the inside skin of fibreglass has been removed and the layer of glass that has been put back is too close to the outside skin. You would still end up with a transon less than an inch thick!

its probably just a fiberglass in loose form rather than matting ,if you have to remove the old wood to get the pourable stuff in then your already half way to using wood anyway ,i would prefer to know the jobs done correctly rather than depending on an uncertain join between compounds especially in damp uk conditions ,it says reslient at 0f what happens when it gets colder

get your fiberglass and resin in bulk and before you start check everywhere ,seat mounts especially (last thing you want to do is go A over T at the first wave, put in some bait wells and check the deck that curved wood is a barsteward to replace if its gone ,we did one section of one of our numerable boats and we had to make our own plywood in a mould to get the curve

lucky you dont have much electrics ,seawater just loves "household" wire ,our yaught had been rewired using ordinary wire and every bit (and there was lots) was rotten as was all the switches etc ,i constructed a fine junction box using a waterproof box (expensive item from RS) all the switches had rubber hoods and all the wire was very expensive ,water in electrics creeps along the sheath of the wire if it gets in through a casually made joint.

Hi Wayne.

Friday is looking good mate. I've sent you email.

On the boat front. Have you got any pictures of your boat that you could post on here? Seeing what you did with your boat and the final result would inspire Elton no end. I would say that your Wilson ended up better than a new one.

Interesting thread although some what unfortunate for Elton.

It would appear to be a common problem and I was wondering if it would be possible to insert polypropylene sheet instead of a ply insert.

It comes in various thicknesses is extreemly strong, will not ROT or other wise deteriorate.

Price wise it should not be any more than top quality marine grade ply or solid hardwood.

Just a thought :) What do you think Steve?

I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. Anglers Trust PM
