JW Avon quiver

I've got one of the original ones, and it's a lovely rod. I've recently added a Drennan Super Specialist Duo Avon/quiver rod to my collection, partly because I've damaged the quivertip on my JW (the earlier versions of the rod had a single permanently fixed quivertip spliced in). I prefer the Drennan, but it's twice the price.

I have the old model JW Avon / Quiver. It gives very little 'feel', and the reel seat is two rubber sliders. I have had to use a pair of Jubillee Clips to hold the reels in place.

OK, I only paid £30 for it, but it certainly isn't my favourite rod for river fishing.

Steve Burke described the old model as feeling 'dead'. I know what he means.

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

I think if nemory serves me right that Steve Burke said he was'nt impressed with the original JW quiver and ended up giving it away, but after testing the new version was quite impressed with that

Dead right. In fact dead is the right word! I also think it was a much higher test curve than the 1¼lbs it was rated at.

However, the Mk II I handled recently was a very much better rod. I didn't fish with it, but would be happy to do so.

I have a couple of Wilson rods (the new version) and while I do like them there is a slight niggling annoyance. I find that the rings on the quiver knacker my line quickly when under tension. Theres that horrible `grating` feel when playing a fish.

I agree with steve the rod to me also feels "dead".I replaced mine with a Drennan specialist duo [sECONDHAND,60QUID].This is far a better rod.Brand new alot more expensive, but there are plenty of good second hand ones knocking about.Another "Avon" style rod worth considering is the TFG "river and stream".I`ve owned mine for a couple of years now and cannot find fault with it.Its now my no1 chubbing rod. :yeah:

Ah, well, Alan got a secondhand JW for 30 quid, so it's still twice the price :bleh:

This is far a better rod.

It is, absolutely excellent, but it's also a very "steely" feeling rod; comparing it to the JW is like comparing an early carbon rod to a hollow glass one. Thing is, there were people who preferred glass.

I was less than impressed with the new style JW Avon Quiver System. Stuck mine on ebay after a couple of uses

The reel seat felt very weak, I could feel the cork flexing in my hand as I tightened down, didn't think it's be long before the corks cracked or popped off, the reel seat also didn't feel very positive, I could always feel some movement in the reel when playing a fish.

The rings also seemed both very cheap, and the legs were too short, I had lots of problems with wet line "sticking" to the rod blank, making casting light float gear very frustrating at times.

OTOH I also have an older JW quiver, that I've had about 14 years now (full cork handle type) that I love, I'd use it any day over the modern "system" version
