Perhaps a genetic aversion but in animals with no contact with humans theres no fear of them i think other than movement or size (related to what they may fear in the animal world as such) but i think more like its eons of your ancestors warning their offspring xxxx can kill or harm you so its instilled into the sub concious ,if you have the knowledge xxxx wont then you may not pass it on but ofcourse in the sub concious its not just your input deciding the action.

My mrs doesnt give a crap about insects if it it there its dead ,if its outside its ok until it enters her territory ,some insects depend on fear of them to help survival others depend on the fear of those beasts and dress like them to help "them" survive ,warning colours dont just warn humans bad things may happen ,the more dangerous beasties tend to be in plain clothes so safer to squish them all just incase LOL

I'm cautious about subscribing to the Araneus diadematus theory here, based on the pictures. There are a lot of characters that fit, the long first pair of legs, the banding on the legs and the eye distribution, not obvious from the picture but appears to be : :: :

Very hairy and very small though, at that size the spiderlings are usually yellow with black markings!

Also the third pair of legs is the shortest....getting closer to A. diadematus......

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Back to killing invertebrates....I do tend to be rather accepting of some that are not ordinarily regarded as pleasant (my job I suppose) but I do have one little affectivity...I kill Pholcus phalangioides (Daddy Longlegs spider)...they are not originally native to the UK and have the rather annoying habit of eating our native spiders, even big ones. They are disturbingly common in my house but I manage to keep the numbers down.

Hence why my mrs tolerates them LOL

But i think ours are harvestmen as the body is round not oval, they have been here forever ..

On closer inspection one is elongated so yours are present to ,figgghhht

Trouble what is natural ,horror stories of the crops failing and everyone starving if the honey bee become extinct in britain but they are not natural either ,probably no longer in this country than 2000 years ,ofcourse as the uk is now colder than then what WAS naturally here in the roman period could have been lost in the medieval cold period and are now naturally reintroducing themselves as we warm up again ,i wonder whats in the fossil records corncerning your daddy longleg version?

Thanks for the replies chaps, I'm glad I wasn't the only one a bit stumped. Having had a look around, I'm now thinking Araneus sturmi.

The size and colour seem to fit, unless anyone can see something I can't.

Erm there are plenty of insects/Arachnids on the uk endangered list: stag beetle, pot beetle, large blue, couple of varieties of skippers, marsh fratilery; think the giant raft spider is there somewhere... that's to name but a few!

But i suspect like the large blue not totally confined to the uk

Should we be concerned if all in your post become extinct ? ,are they there for our pleasure like reintroducing them for no apparent reason ,as i said extinctions are totally natural ,what do i lose not seeing a stag beetle? ,what did i lose when the dodo became extinct? Not seeing a live day dodo ? I have never seen the queen live but i find i am not mourning because of it

Are they threatened or is it a ruse to get something ,usually filthy lucre?
