Is it all for show?

Trev, who designs these things in the first place?? not the cheaper guys. Most of the real expense is in the initial design and marketing (and the risks involved)

It's easy to come up with a cheap alternative if you simply copy anothers design.

I've never seen the problem. Nobody moans at a woman if she spends money on clothes that make her look and feel good :)

Spend it on beer, it will cost even less to make her look good :):)

Well I have to tell you that if I could not have decent looking gear, I'd quit fishing.

I mean, who would wear fall colored camo to fish in spring or oak pattern if you were sitting near reeds? It simply would not be proper.

And if the bivy & buckets & all the rest are not a match for the camo pattern of your clothing, you look like a right idiot.

The idea of having a spread of rods where the rods & reels were not an exact match or set in the rod pod at exactly the same angle with handles positioned alike is so horrible as to cause me a bit of nausea just thinking about it.

Sometimes I really wonder if some folks are proper carpers at all.

I agree with some of that, but the marketing bit is to get a well known celeb/fisherman to endorse your product and give him heap loads of gear and money to put his name to it, then add that to the price tag for us to pay. If a top notch angler of no fame put his name to it,then no one would be interested in buying it, even though he might have banked as many fish as a known name or even more or be an excllent angler, but because he isn't regualy featured in Total Carp it would be a no no, but then there is some that do get involved in the design/development.

As for design, I agree a lot would go into a new reel or rod, as the new Fox reel, but at a £130, it's going to have to be good, to take on the likes of the Shimano 10K etc.

Think the over pricing for the name is more aimed at lugage, holdalls etc.
