yesterday my heart skipped about 10 beats when i lost a pike. i was using a white toby spoon. it was 2 feet from the bank so i could see it then suddenly this pike (about 5 to 6 lb) came out of the darkness took a swipe at my toby and just clipped the trebble it then had a second try and as fast as it appeared it vanished in the same way. it was realy somthing to see and the fact that i didnt hook up meant nothing :clap2:

Nice to see such positivity about a lost fish. Keep at it and he'll be on the bank next time.

Watching a pike take a lure is one of the most exciting things to see.

Andy, that's when the Polaroids really make themselves useful. Apart from the obvious being able to see the fish grabbing your lure, you often get to see fish following a lure that you may otherwise have thought was no use. I know myself how quickly you can go off a lure because you haven't take a fish on it but if you can actually see fish taking an interest at least, it's enough to spur you on with a little added confidence.

Good one mate, it is great to see your positive attitude. There will (I hope) be many fish come your way in the future. Have lost some big barramundi at the last moment and I never lose the thrill of it all.

Well done :thumbs::thumbs:

Always tons of fun when that happens Andy. Makes for an interesting day.

You may have been lucky that the fish tried and basically missed your lure though. Getting a green fish with that little line out accounts for the only rod I can ever remember breaking while playing a fish. Dang fish took the lure and left while I was still watching and in shock. I didn't even have the presence of mind to lower the rod until it was too late.

LOL - well worth it though.

That's happened to me a lot! Just recently I was lure fishing at a local lake and the pike were in a strange mood - they'd follow the lures all the way to the bank and either have a half-hearted go at them or just sit right at my feet (I was standing in about a foot of water), until they realised what was going on. I had a few Jacks up to about 2 or 3lbs do that and then one chheky bugger of about 15lb! I get so excited my guts begin to ache and I feel quite queezy! That's fishing for you though, not so much the "what was" but the "what could be..."

I think that would be great to see a big pike actually chasing your lure. I am going to start Piking come open season. Never really fished Carp or Pike but i'm pretty sure i'm a Pike kinda guy. Lure fished for Perch which was pretty exciting watching them take the spinners. Some were pretty large approaching 3lbs.

i dont think there is any 'open season' for pike ive fished them prety much all year round from end of summer last year through winter and still catching them this spring but thats the first ive seen one chase the lure, amazing stuff, like andy said i need to get me those polerised sun glasses. i want to see somthing like that more regular but without loosing it :2:

i think i once heard a topic on here a guy wading and returned a trout when a pike snatched it out of his hands :fishing:

For future trips, you might want to try changing the lure color if you are getting follows but not takes. Sometimes just switching to an identical lure in yellow when they are following green will make all the difference or red when they won't hit white or whatever.

The folks in the US who lure fish for pike from a boat sometimes do a 'figure of 8' with the lure when it is to the boat and before they take it out to cast again. Pike are known to hit it at that point. Not sure how you could do that when fishing from shore though.
